An anime adaptation of Netflix's original film Bright is currently in development.As part of Netflix's Geeked Week, the streaming platform announced that it is producing an anime adaptation of the 2017 urban fantasy-action movie Bright, directed by David Ayer (Fury, Suicide Squad). Titled Bright: Samurai Soul, the anime film will abandon the original's modern setting, transposing the story into a feudalistic Japanese society. It will follow the ronin Izo and the orc Raiden, as they work together to escort an elf girl and her magic wand to the land of elves in the north.
While there are currently very few details about the new anime, Netflix did confirm that Kyohei Ishiguro will direct the film. Ishiguro has previously worked with Sunrise, the anime studio behind such classics as Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop and the Gundam franchise, and since 2011 has worked as a freelance director. He has directed individual episodes of popular anime like Fairy Tail and Psycho-Pass. Ishiguro is best known as the primary director on Occultic;Nine, Netflix's Children of the Whales and the beloved musical anime Your Lie in April.
Although Bright was immediately met with harsh criticism upon its release, the film is still one of Netflix's most-watched and successful original titles. Because of the film's popularity, a sequel is currently in the works, also directed by David Ayer.
Bright stars Will Smith as human LAPD officer Daryl Ward in an alternate reality Los Angeles where fantasy creatures live alongside human beings. Ward is partnered with Joel Edgerton's Nick Jakoby, the United States' first orc police officer and the two must fight against police corruption as they try to keep an elf girl, Leilah (Noomi Rapace) and her magic wand out of the hands of evil creatures.
