Black Summer is a prequel to the hit Syfy zombie apocalypse television series Z Nation, which ran from 2014 to 2018. The prequel series was co-created by Z Nation's executive producers Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and debuted on Netflix in April 2019 with eight hour-long episodes. Both Schaefer and Hyams also serve as showrunners on the Netflix series.

Season 1 of the prequel series was set six weeks after the start of a zombie apocalypse and followed a mother named Rose as she attempted to reunite with her estranged teenage daughter Anna. Along the way, Rose also watched her husband Patrick (Ty Olsson) die in the process. In November 2019, the series was renewed for a second season, which will also consist of eight episodes.
