The World of Avatar

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a fantasy world made up of four individual nations corresponding to one of the four elements: water, earth, fire and air. While many across these nations are able to "bend" or manipulate these elements using numerous forms of martial arts, only the Avatar is capable of mastering all four and is tasked with maintaining balance between the nations and between humans and spirits.

The original series, Avatar: The Last Airbender (also known in some regions as Avatar: The Legend of Aang) was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It premiered in 2005 and ran for three seasons, reaching the story's conclusion in 2008. It continues to enjoy a passionate fanbase, which resulted in the establishment of Avatar Studios, a division of Nickelodeon dedicated to projects expanding the world of Avatar.

Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series does not yet have a release date. All three seasons of the original animated Nickelodeon series is available to stream on Paramount+.
