Netflix has officially announced Space Bandits, the company's next comic book project.

This female-led sci-fi story is written by veteran comics creator Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Ultimate X-Men), illustrated by Matteo Scalera (Black Science, Batman) and will feature a limited edition cover by Howard Chaykin (Star Wars, Dominic Fortune).

Published by Image Comics, Space Bandits is slated to hit comic shops in early July. The comic revolves around Thena Khole and Cody Blue, two of the universe's most-wanted felons. Known for carrying out various heists throughout the galaxy, Thena and Cody are forced into a quest for revenge upon being betrayed by their crews. Millar describes the series as "a female Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" set in outer space.

"In a world with a billion superhero properties and gloomy, rain-soaked dystopian sci-fi, there's a gap in the market for sci-fi that's upbeat and fun," said Millar. "I wanted to combine all this into a big, high-octane story."

Millar explains that he has been working on this new project as a property for Netflix since last summer, and was excited when Scalera was brought on board.

"I'm being joined by the brilliant Matteo Scalera for the comic book translation of this story," he continued. "The guy's a genius and I've followed him for years. Having him draw this is like someone you've always had a crush on going out on a date with you. He's just amazing."

In addition to the series itself, the limited edition Space Bandits Legends Covers, which will collect variants by Millar's favorite artists, will also be made available for 75¢ (the cost of comic books when Millar was in high school.) The first of these covers is the one drawn by the aforementioned Chaykin.

Netflix acquired Millarworld -- Mark and Lucy Millar's comic book company -- in 2017. Multiple comic book and television projects were subsequently set in motion, with Space Bandits being only the latest example.

The first comic to be created by Millar following the acquisition was The Magic Order, which was followed by the likes Sharkey the Bounty Hunter (which Scalera also worked on) and Prodigy (based on the Netflix original movie.)
