Streaming giant Netflix has entered new production line partnerships with four anime studios.Per an official release, Netflix has partnered with Japanese anime studios NAZ (Hamatora: The Animation), Science SARU (Devilman Crybaby) and MAPPA (Attack on Titan: The Final Season), as well as South Korea's Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender). The official @NXOnNetflix Twitter account celebrated this announcement with a promotional video.
Netflix previously signed non-exclusive deals with such Japanese anime production houses as Production I.G, Bones, Anima, Sublimation and David Production. These new deals with NAZ, Science SARU, MAPPA and Studio Mir bring Netflix's anime partnership program to a total of nine studios, with the Studio Mir deal in particular signaling an expansion beyond Japan.
"In just four years, we've built a dedicated team based in Tokyo that serves to entertain the global anime community through new and aspirational storytelling," said Taiki Sakurai, Netflix's Anime Chief Producer. "With these additional partnerships with industry trailblazers who do amazing work often marrying the latest technologies and traditional hand-drawn animation, we're excited to bring fans a greater variety of even more amazing stories."
In 2020, Netflix's deals with anime studios has already resulted in such shows as Altered Carbon: Resleeved (Anima) Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (Production I.G) and Dragon's Dogma (Sublimation). Anime like Spriggan (David Production), Vampire in the Garden (Production I.G's WIT STUDIO) and Super Crooks (Bones) are currently in development for "2021 and beyond."
