Netflix has announced Exception, a new sci-fi horror anime that will feature character designs from Final Fantasy's Yoshitaka Amano.

Exception was announced by Netflix as part of its Geeked Week event. The new horror anime is based on a new story by Japanese author and director Otsuichi, who previously wrote the screenplay for Ultraman Geed, as well as the surrealist manga The Chronicle of The Clueless Age. Celebrated watercolor painter Yoshitaka Amano, widely known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, Vampire Hunter D and Neil Gaiman's The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, will provide character designs for the series.

Set in the distant future where humans have been forced to abandon the Earth and look for a new home in another galaxy, Exception tells the story of a team of explorers who are sent to a newly discovered planet with the goal of terraforming it. When their ship arrives on the new planet, the members of the team are reconstructed using a 3D printer that's capable of reproducing biological matter, which will presumably also be the source of Exception's horror.

While he is now best known for his illustrative work on the Final Fantasy video game series, Yoshitaka Amano actually got his start in the anime industry, where he worked on the original Speed Racer. Since then, he's worked on anime such as Casshan and Tekkaman: The Space Knight. Exception is not Amano's first experience with horror anime -- he also provided the character designs for the post-apocalyptic 2020 series Gibiate.

Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for Exception.
