Streaming behemoth Netflix now has more than 200 million subscribers worldwide.

This milestone comes courtesy of an additional 8.51 million subscribers in the fourth quarter, giving the company a total of 203.7 million customers by the end of 2020. Netflix originally projected 6 million new subscribers in Q4.

Overall, 2020 saw 36.6 million new subscriptions, making it the company's biggest year to date after beating 2018's 28.6 million. Of course, COVID-19 and the global lockdowns brought on by the pandemic played a role in this growth.

In 2020, Netflix spent approximately $17.3 billion on content -- largely original -- and its budget is expected to exceed $26 billion by 2028.

On Jan. 13, Netflix announced it would release a new movie every week throughout 2021, with 71 original films in total. "We’re most excited about the accumulation of different things," Netflix Head of Original Films Scott Stuber said. "We like our continuation in the YA space with All The Boys and Kissing Booth in a genre we’ve helped reignite, this Fear Street trilogy we’ve got with Chernin Entertainment, as we work out the cadence of how we release them. It’s something we’ve never been able to do before, where they are in close proximity and you can see a film trilogy in short order as opposed to the usual every two years."
