UPDATE: 2/18/15 5:05 PM PT: Deadline has further details on the new Alien film, including word that Ridley Scott -- director of the original Alien and Prometheus -- will produce the new, Neill Blomkamp-directed film. Scott is set to both direct and produce the Prometheus sequel, according to the site, which also reports that neither film currently has a script.

It appears a new Alien film is happening for Neill Blomkamp after all. The writer and director posted to Instagram on Wednesday an illustration of an Alien xenomorph, along with the text, "Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien." Variety subsequently reported that 20th Century Fox has "closed a deal" with Blomkamp for a new Alien, separate from a still-active Prometheus sequel in development with Ridley Scott.

This follows Blomkamp starting 2015 with multiple posts to his Instagram account of concept art for a new Alien film, stating "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore." Last week, Blomkamp was quoted as saying there was still a "high possibility" the film would still happen.

Blomkamp first captured the attention of wide audiences with 2009's District 9, followed by 2013's Elysium; both sci-fi films allegorically commenting on contemporary social issues. His next film, Chappie -- featuring Alien franchise star Sigourney Weaver in a supporting role -- is scheduled for release on March 6.

SPINOFF ONLINE has reached out to 20th Century Fox for comment, but did not receive a response by press time.
