Dune director Denis Villeneuve's comment about the Marvel Cinematic Universe sparked a variety of responses from across the internet. Now Neill Blomkamp, director of sci-fi films District 9 and Demonic, weighed in on the debate with a few strong words.

Blomkamp retweeted a post from Fandom of Villeneuve's MCU comments in which the Dune director said there are "too many Marvel movies," describing them as "nothing more than a cut and paste of others." Blomkamp responded succinctly, "What a fucking asshole."

Villeneuve's full thoughts about the MCU were spread across two recent interviews he did while promoting his upcoming film adaptation of Dune. "The problem today... Well, if we're talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold," Villeneuve told French magazine Premiere. "Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they're all cast in the same factory. It doesn't take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted." The quote from Fandom's post was taken from a separate interview that Villeneuve had with El Mundo.

Villeneuve previously alluded to his thoughts about the MCU during a one-on-one interview with Eternals director Chloe Zhao. He began the interview praising Zhao's directing. "I'm your biggest fan," he said. "I think it's genius that Marvel approached you because you're the radical opposite of it aesthetically. When I saw The Rider for the first time, I was blown away... What touched me was your insane skill to be able to approach life. Life is so afraid of the camera... I wonder how you can invite life in a Marvel movie." Zhao later praised Villeneuve in the same interview and said she referenced his films when pitching her upcoming MCU film Eternals.

Blomkamp recently released his science fiction-horror hybrid film Demonic both in theaters and on-demand. The movie was filmed in secret during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Blomkamp decided it would be a good time to tackle a smaller-scale project once production on his higher-budget film Inferno was suspended. Demonic is Blomkamp's first feature film since Chappie in 2015. The director shared he is working on a sequel to District 9, the film that earned him nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others, at the Academy Awards.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica and Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Dune will debut in theaters, as well as for a limited time on HBO Max, on Oct. 22. Demonic is available now on VOD.
