NECA is introducing two human characters to its line of licensed Gargoyles action figures: Elisa Maza and David Xanatos.

The figures are the first human members of the classic animated series' cast released under NECA's "Disney's Gargoyles Ultimate" banner. They both stand seven inches tall and boast multiple points of articulation, plus interchangeable head and hand parts. The Elisa and Xanatos figures also come packaged with several character-specific accessories, as well as folded wing attachments for NECA's Brooklyn (Elisa) and Demona (Xanatos) figures.

Gargoyles premiered in October 1994 and ran for three seasons, airing its final episode in February 1997. Since then, fans of the animated series have held out hopes that Disney will revisit the story of Goliath and his clan via a revival movie or TV show, however, no such project has yet materialized. That said, Gargoyles co-creator Greg Weisman recently launched a continuation comic book series through Dynamite Entertainment, which is intended to serve as the show's fourth season. The first issue of the Gargoyles comic hit shelves in December 2022 and was produced by Weisman, artist and colorist George Kambadais and letterer Jeff Eckleberry.

Are Dynamite's Gargoyles Comics Canon?

The Dynamite series isn't the first attempt to keep the Gargoyles franchise alive via comics, though. Marvel Comics, Slave Labor Graphics and Joe Books all published titles based on the cartoon at different times from the mid-90s to the late-2010s, leading fans to wonder which of these stories remain part of the official Gargoyles canon. This led Weisman to set the record straight in a recent interview. "Canon is the 65 episodes of Season 1 and 2 of Gargoyles (which originally aired from 1994-1996), plus the 12 issues of the SLG [Slave Labor Graphics] Gargoyles comic from earlier this century, and the six issues of the SLG Gargoyles: Bad Guys comic from that same time," he said.

Despite this, Weisman later stated that the Gargoyles comics' ties to existing continuity shouldn't deter new readers from picking up the series. "[I]f I'm doing my job right, you don't need to have seen or read anything previously to enjoy the new stuff," he said. At the same time, the scribe also admitted that readers will "obviously get more out of [the Gargoyles comic] if [they] look at the entire tapestry that makes up the Gargoyles Universe."

The Disney's Gargoyles Ultimate Elisa Maza and David Xanatos action figures are available for pre-order now and carry a recommended retail price of $47.99 each.
