NCIS Season 19 is fast approaching and big changes coming when it arrives. Some new cast members will take over important roles because a few longtime members have moved on, while others have reduced screen time. All of that was known, but there is a new rumor that NCIS could be getting a new cast member back. According to the rumor, Special Agent Anthony Dinozzo may be making an NCIS comeback.

Michael Weatherly, who plays Dinozzo, recently got the internet buzzing after he personally started a rumor of his return to the NCIS franchise with a cryptic Twitter post. Captioned “#ncis Camera is King,” the post features Weatherly in NCIS garb, on a film set and looking directly at a camera. It’s far from a casting confirmation, but the tweet does warrant a conversation.

Weatherly left NCIS during the Season 13 finale after Tony learned that Ziva (Cote de Pablo) had died in a mortar attack. He also learned that he and Ziva had a daughter, which was why he left. He went to France to be with little Tali and start a new life with her. That was the last time Tony appeared on NCIS. However, he has been referenced multiple times since then -- most notably when Ziva made her shocking return in Season 16. After her cameo appearance, she moved to France to be with Tony and Tali, where they all currently live.

So, the question is whether Weatherly could be making a comeback after all that. Bluntly, the answer is probably no -- at least not in a full-time role. Official casting news would have been released by now if that was the case. Not to mention Weatherly still has his own gig as Dr. Jason Bull in CBS’ Bull.

With that said, Weatherly regularly tweets about Bull, but he doesn’t normally post about or tag NCIS. So, while he is probably not tabbed for a full-time role, nothing says that he can’t make a cameo appearance like Ziva did.

Fans have clamored for something like that for years, and what’s currently happening in the show could work really well for a cameo. With Agent Sloane (Maria Bello) and Agent Bishop (Emily Wickersham)’s exits, there are voids that need filling. On top of that, Agent Gibbs is reportedly taking on a lessened role for Season 19 after his suspension from the team. With all of that, an appearance by Tony could be a good way for a familiar face to help smooth over the transition to the new cast members. Who knows, maybe in a season or two, he could return and be NCIS' face when Mark Harmon decides to fully retire Gibbs.
