Following in the footsteps of shows like Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-0, NCIS: Hawai'i had an impressive first season. Some fans even think that it outdid Hawaii Five-0. Whether it's the superior crime drama or not, NCIS' latest spinoff did a solid job of taking the classic NCIS formula and adapting it to the Hawaiian Islands.

In addition to treating the island like its own character, NCIS: Hawai'i put a focus on family life -- featuring it just as much as the weekly cases. That seemed to hit home with viewers and Season 2 will probably continue the trend. With the entire original cast back, the next season can only improve on Season 1's great foundation. Here's everything that NCIS: Hawai'i has in store Season 2, including its story, characters, trailer and release date.

What Is NCIS: Hawai'i Season 2's Story?

NCIS Hawaii Jessie Lucy and Ernie

Unlike its predecessor, NCIS: Hawai'i's first season didn't end on a cliffhanger. Everything was just peachy as the season closed on a big party that Jane Tennant had thrown for her colleagues and their families. Lucy and Whistler were together, Kai and his father were on good terms, and Tennant had a budding romance of her own with Captain Joe Milius. With all the plot points seemingly resolved, there's only room to speculate on what Season 2 will cover.

Perhaps Lucy and Whistler will find some bumps in the road, but it still looks like they will be the series' marquee couple, so they're probably together for the long haul. However, the future is less hopeful for Tennant and Milius. The captain was ordered back to the Pentagon for a new mission, so if he and Tennant were to have a relationship, it would have to be long-distance. When asked about the pairing, Vanessa Lachey told PopCulture.com, "I will say we started filming Season 2 and there are some sparks, and it may or may not be [with] Milius. But you won't be disappointed. That I can promise."

Since there wasn't any major drama left over from season, the series will find some stateside. CBS has announced that the Gibbs-less NCIS and NCIS: Hawai'i's first episodes will be a crossover event. In "A Family Matter," Tennant and Ernie will be in Washington DC for a meeting with Director Vance, and while there, the pair will help McGee and Company track down the Raven. Then, in "Prisoners' Dilema," Torres and Knight will head off to Oahu to continue their pursuit of the Raven. Hopefully, this won't be the last crossover of the season because it's always great when TV universes connect.

NCIS Hawaii Key Art

Lachey is back as Jane Tennant, the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile, Noah Mills plays Jesse Boone, Tennant's second-in-command. Other members of the team include Yasmine Al-Bustami as Lucy Tara, Alex Tarrant as Kai Holman and Jason Antoon as computer specialist Ernie Malik. Meanwhile, Tori Anderson is back as FBI agent Kate Whistler. Kian Talan is also returning as Alex Tennant, while Mahina Napoleon is will once again play Julie Tennant in a recurring role. Napoleon can next be seen in Tales of the Walking Dead on AMC.

The only real question about casting is whether Enver Gjokaj will be back as Captain Milius. He was tabbed as a recurring character in Season 1, and if he returns, he will likely have the same status in Season 2. However, after Lachey played coy about the future of Milius and Tennant's relationship, fans will just have to wait and see if the character returns or stays at the Pentagon.
