NBC’s new take on Dracula has cast the pivotal roles of Jonathan Harker and legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, The River) will portray Van Helsing and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Mr. Selfridge) will play Harker in the series, which has been characterized as “Dangerous Liaisons meets The Tudors.”
The 10-episode period drama, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Bram Stoker’s famed vampire, who here is living a double life in London as an American entrepreneur who desires to introduce modern science to Victorian society. But secretly the Count is plotting revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier — that is, until he falls hopelessly in love Mina Murray (Arrow‘s Jessica De Gouw), who appears to be the reincarnation of his dead wife.
In NBC’s version of the classic story, written by Cole Haddon, Van Helsing is a brilliant professor with a thirst for revenge that makes him more of a danger to the public than to Dracula, while Harker is a journalist desperate to climb the ranks of the aristocracy.
Dracula also stars Katie McGrath (Merlin) as Lucy Westenra and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones) as Renfeld.
