NBC has picked up a pilot for “a dark but fantastical cop drama” set in a world where characters from Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Called simply Grimm, the Universal Media Studios project comes from writers-producers Jim Kouf (Angel) and David Greenwalt (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner are executive producers.
At first blush Grimm‘s premise resembles Fables, the acclaimed Vertigo comic series by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham about characters from folkore and fairy tales who live in exile in modern New York City and elsewhere in the “mundane” world. The very first story arc, “Legends in Exile,” was a mystery in which Sheriff Bigby Wolf investigated the apparent murder of Rose Red. ABC announced plans for a Fables television series in 2008, but Willingham acknowledged just last month that the project “is probably dead.”
The Grimm order follows NBC’s pilot commitment for 17th Precinct, an ensemble police drama with supernatural elements from Battlestar Galactica producer Ronald D. Moore that’s been described as “an adult Harry Potter.”
