NBC Orders "The Sixth Gun" Pilot

NBC has ordered a pilot for "The Sixth Gun," a supernatural Western based on the Oni Press series by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, EW.com reports. "Lost" veteran Carlton Cuse is producing.

Set in the American West in the aftermath of the Civil War, the comic centers around six pistols of otherworldly power. The most dangerous of the weapons, the Sixth Gun of the title, vanishes, only to resurface in the hands of an innocent girl, reawakening dark forces. Villains believed long dead set their sights on the pistol, and only the gunslinger Drake Sinclair stands in their way.

Ryan Condal, who penned the adaptation of Radical Publishing's "Hercules: The Thracian War" for director Brett Ratner, will write the pilot. Eric Gitter and Andy Borne of Closed on Mondays, the sister company of Oni Press, are executive prodcing.

Cuse, who was co-showrunner on "Lost" with Damon Lindelof, is keeping busy this year, serving as co-executive producer of the A&E thriller "Bates Motel" and developing the FX adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's vampire trilogy "The Strain."

"The Sixth Gun" previously had been in development as a miniseries for NBC's cable sibling Syfy. The first issue of the series, which debuted on Free Comic Book Day 2010, can be read at Robot 6.
