NBC Books Trip to 'Emerald City'

NBC is the latest network to wander upon the yellow brick road — and perhaps it's the network that's furthest along.

Writers and executive producers Matt Arnold and Josh Friedman are joining up with NBC to create Emerald City, based on the classic Oz novels penned by Frank L. Baum. NBC has issued a 10-episode straight-to-series order.

In a press release, Emerald City is described as "a dramatic and modern reimagining of the tales that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we've never seen him before. A head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz."

Emerald City marks yet another attempt to tell the story of Oz on the small-screen. CBS is said to be eyeing a Wizard of Oz medical drama based in modern day New York City, while Heroes creator Tim Kring was in talks with The CW about his own Oz project, titled Dorothy Must Die, as recently as last September.
