Released in 2004, National Treasure starred Nicolas Cage as a historian and cryptologist searching for treasures hidden by the American Freemasons during the American Revolutionary War. It was followed by a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, in 2007, and it was widely believed that a third installment would arrive soon after. In fact, in 2008, Bruckheimer said National Treasure 3 was in development and in 2010, he said there was already a first draft of the screenplay.

Updates on the status of the film were few and far between from there until 2017, when Bruckheimer revealed the script was complete, but not to Disney's satisfaction. This was reiterated by director Jon Turteltaub one year later.

Finally, in March 2019, Iger seemed to hint that National Treasure 3 could still be a possibility, confirming he had been in touch with Bruckheimer and discussed the project.
