Actor Nathan Fillion today posted to Instagram a strange and mysterious image of him sitting in the cockpit of a starship, dressed like a character straight out of the “Conan” comic book series. Fillion appended the post with a comment suggesting the picture was proof of his involvement in a cut scene from the upcoming sci-fi action film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

The image has Fillion behind the controls of a starship sailing through the dead of space. He wears a simple fur coat adorned with various metal trinkets and beads. His hair is clearly (hopefully) a long, flowing wig that passes his shoulders in length. He stares, resolute, into the void.

Fillion offered no additional details about the nature of the role or the scrapped scene, though he has enjoyed a long friendship with the movie’s director, James Gunn. Fillion starred in Gunn’s first film, “Slither,” so it’s not a big surprise that he was cast in a bit role for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” In fact, he was in “Guardians of the Galaxy” as an alien who hassles Star-Lord in the Kyln prison, then ends up getting a nose job from Groot.

There’s little chance Fillion’s cut role will remain a mystery forever, though. The scene may not make it to theaters, but there’s a good chance it will get a second life as a deleted scene in the home release later this year.

The image of Fillion manning a starship likely hit close to home for sci-fi fans who still remember the actor’s role in the 2002 television series “Firefly.” In the show, Fillion played Malcolm Reynolds, the roguish captain of the starship Serenity. The show lasted a single season when it aired on the Fox network, but garnered a massive fanbase upon home release.

Gunn certainly isn’t afraid to work celebrity cameos into his films. The first “Guardians of the Galaxy” is full of them. Maybe one of the most surprising cameos is musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie, who played the Ravager Navigator in the film. Seth Green got the honor of voicing Howard the Duck in the film’s post-credits tag, and even Gunn got in on the action when he played one of the soldiers who confronts Star-Lord while he’s attempting to steal the Infinity Stone-bearing orb in the film’s opening.

Debuting in theaters on May 5, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is a production of Marvel Studios directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
