Only five women have been nominated in the Academy's 92-year history, with only one taking home the award: Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker. 2020, unfortunately, didn't change things. This year's nominees were Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Todd Phillips for Joker, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, with Joon Ho winning this year.

However, 2020 was also a year with an enormous amount of beautifully crafted and critically praised movies by women directors. Natalie Portman's wardrobe homage included most of the names that the Academy didn't consider: Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers, Lulu Wang for The Farewell, Greta Gerwig for Little Women, Mati Diop for Atlantics, Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Melina Matsoukas for Queen & Slim, Alma Har'el for Honey Boy and Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
