While promoting her latest film, the upcoming drama Vox Lux, Natalie Portman addressed rumors that would reprise her Star Wars role as Padmé Amidala in a cameo for next year's Episode IX.
Portman appeared on the Buzzfeed News program AM to DM to promote Vox Lux with the host talking a moment to ask her about online rumors that the Academy Award winner would reprise her prequel trilogy role in the upcoming sequel.
"Really?!" exclaimed Portman, visibly surprised by the question. "I guess it's not true, because I don't know about it yet!"
Portman had starred in all three Star Wars prequels as Padmé Amidala, the one-time regent and senator of Naboo as well as the ill-fated mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa and secret wife of Anakin Skywalker. While the character died in childbirth at the end of Revenge of the Sith, rumors arose that she would return in a limited capacity in Episode IX.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film is scheduled to open on December 20, 2019.
