Fresh off of her celebrated turn in director Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, Natalie Portman could enter an entirely different stratosphere of Hollywood with the lead role in Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron’s developing science fiction thriller co-starring Robert Downey Jr.
Previously set up with Angelina Jolie in the lead role, Gravity tells the story of an astronaut who survives a massive catastrophe while repairing the Hubble telescope. The only survivor of the incident, the astronaut has to fight her way back to Earth to reunite with her daughter. The project nearly collapsed due to Jolie’s recent departure, leaving Warner Bros. executives uncertain about the ambitious $80 million film.
Now, with critics and audiences alike rallying in support of Portman’s Black Swan performance after screenings at the Venice and Telluride film festivals this past weekend, Warner Bros. has allegedly made an offer to Portman to star in Gravity. If she accepts the role, she’ll find herself carrying the film almost entirely on her shoulders, much like Tom Hanks in Cast Away and James Franco in the upcoming 127 Days.
According to Risky Business, Portman is expected to read the latest version of the script this week and make a decision shortly.
