Despite what many who are unfamiliar with the industry tend to think, voice acting is no easy task. Things can get even more complicated when it comes to dubbing over content in English, which is the cast of voice actors that this will focus on. It can be a struggle to time things correctly and line translations up with lip flaps that don't always properly match.

There are some characters within the series that are voiced so well and sound so iconic that it's incredibly difficult to picture anyone else taking their place. Others, even if the voice talent themselves don't do a bad job, simply don't fit the character they're given and come off as somewhat jarring.

10 NAILED: Tom Gibis Perfectly Captures Shikamaru's Laid-Back Brainiac Personality

Tom Gibis is the English voice actor for Shikamaru, and he does an absolutely fantastic job in nailing his role. His voice isn't grating at all to listen to, which is certainly helpful when he goes into one of his rather long-winded speeches about his tactics and battle strategies.

He's perfectly able to capture Shikamaru's laid-back and genius personality incredibly well. The few-and-far-between moments where he does show serious emotion for those close to him are also handled in a great way.

9 FAILED: Konohamaru Makes It Difficult For Colleen O'Shaughnessey

Konohamaru's voice in the early days of the English dub can be incredibly hard to listen to at times. In her defense, though, this isn't really the fault of the voice actress, as Colleen O'Shaughnessey is incredibly talented and voices Ino, Chocho, and Hanabi as well.

It's pretty difficult for young characters, especially young male characters within anime, to be voiced well within dubs. It isn't usually as grating in Japanese, but there's something about young children in English dubs that almost always comes off as squeaky and hard to listen to.

8 NAILED: Yuri Lowenthal Nails The Edgy-Avenger Side Of Sasuke

sasuke from naruto

Sasuke's personality is perfectly captured within his voice, and this is no surprise given how talented Yuri Lowenthal is. He's voiced close to six hundred characters in total over his career, which is an absolutely staggering number, and with all of those roles comes refined talent.

Sasuke's voice is arguably the most well-done out of Team Seven. He even pulls off the grumpy, inexperienced father side of him that comes out during Boruto.

7 FAILED: Many Fans Actually Don't Care For Naruto's English Voice By Maile Flanagan

naruto in the rain naruto shippuden

Especially when it comes to the early days of the series, many fans actually have a problem with how Naruto's English voice comes off. This isn't Maile Flanagan's fault, and it's more so that Naruto suffers the same fate as Konohamaru. A prepubescent boy being voiced by an adult woman just doesn't always translate well.

This is only made worse given how many Talk-No-Jutsu speeches Naruto gives throughout the series, meaning there's really no way to avoid his voice. It's not as if the voice given to Naruto doesn't suit him, but there are a lot of other voices that overshadow it, at least until after the first timeskip.

6 NAILED: Orochimaru's Menacing, Imposing Presence Is Felt From His Very First Spoken Line Of Dialogue By Steve Blum

Orochimaru is the main antagonist for much of the Naruto series, and his character is voiced near-flawlessly. Steve Blum does a fantastic job at capturing Orochimaru's intimidating, evil presence.

It's hard not to feel chills when hearing his lines for the first time, which often means the viewer experiences the same spine-chilling terror that the characters do. When voice actors are able to deepen fans' connection with the show through their work, they've done a truly phenomenal job.

5 FAILED: Chiyo's English Voice By Barbara Goodson Doesn't Do Her Justice In The Way The Sub Does

In addition to young children, there's another demographic that just doesn't seem to be voiced very well when the transition from Japanese subtitles to English dub is made. Sadly, it often feels as if older characters don't get represented well when it comes to voices, as it's usually people much younger attempting to make their voice sound older.

Chiyo has been noted by fans to come off as grating at times, especially with the way that she pronounces Sasori's name. Given the fact that the majority of her on-screen time is a long fight against Sasori, it makes her a bit hard to listen to.

4 NAILED: Kakashi Is Portrayed Masterfully by Dave Wittenburg

There really isn't anyone who can pull off Kakashi's English rendition like Dave Wittenburg. No matter what emotion Kakashi needs to get across on-screen, he does an absolutely phenomenal job nailing it.

His serious jonin side, his laid-back side, and his intense combat side are all done masterfully and give the sense that he's a real, intimately fleshed-out character. The few moments that fans get of him fanboying over the Make-Out Paradise series are hilariously voiced and intensely relatable for most anime fans who have their own fictional obsessions.

3 FAILED: Catero Colbert Tries To Tap Into Killer Bee's Comedic Side, But It Doesn't Work Well

Killer Bee bristling with swords in Naruto

Catero Colbert doesn't do a bad job when it comes to dubbing Killer Bee. In fact, the voice that they end up giving him fits quite well for his character, as he's known to have quite the comedic side, but that's also part of the problem.

Especially as the series goes further in, Naruto focuses less and less on the comedic aspects of the show. Killer Bee has appearances in some pretty important fights and moments, so his jarring delivery compared to his Japanese voice leaves some fans unsatisfied.

2 NAILED: Temari Comes Across As The Perfect Blend Of Sassy & Powerful With Tara Platt's Voice

temari worried from naruto

Temari's English voice actress absolutely knocks it out of the park when it comes to getting her character across. She manages to make Temari a fan favorite, despite the fact that she's technically an enemy of the Leaf at the very start of it all.

This is no surprise when considering the fact that it's Tara Platt who voices her. She's an incredibly talented actress known for other popular roles such as Edelgard from Three Houses, Mitsuru and Elizabeth from Persona 3, and Washimi from Aggretsuko.

1 FAILED: Danzo's Voice Actor Isn't Bad, But It Doesn't Feel Like William Frederick Knight Suits His Character

Danzo shimura bleeding in Naruto

In some cases, an anime character might just end up with a voice that doesn't seem to fit them. This is the case with Danzo, who's voiced by William Frederick Knight.

Virtually all of his roles are elderly male characters, and while Danzo does qualify, his voice just feels off. His Japanese voice doesn't come off quite as flat and shows Danzo's age while still fitting his menacing character, so it's rather hard to compete with the sub in this case.
