Choji Akimichi is one of Naruto's most well-known shinobi, debuting alongside Shikamaru and Ino. Though his blubbery appearance may insinuate weakness, he has proven time and again that he is worthy of being called ninja, capable of expanding his body and focusing his chakra into deadly attacks.

He has progressed much the Chunin Exams and his unfortunately quick loss against Dosu, especially when he finally decided to use his food pills in battle. To assess his worth as a warrior, we contrast him against five other ninjas to determine how strong the kindhearted, curly cheeked chip eater really is.

10 Would Lose - Rock Lee

Rock Lee fighting

As impressive as Choji's strength and speed become in his Butterfly state, it is not something he can hold indefinitely, or even for a prolonged period of time. On the other hand, Rock Lee's speed has been nothing short of incredible, darting across the battlefield in the blink of an eye even during the Chunin Exams.

Additionally, Lee's ability to open the gates can be sustained longer than Choji's wings with much more meaningful results. When Konoha was beset by meteors, he destroyed one by himself.

9 Could Beat - Ino

Ino smiling

Ino's "Mind Transfer" jutsu requires that her target be relatively still as it is prepared, and it is her primary means of attack. While Choji may lack the willpower to escape from it if he is caught, it's unlikely she could be able to hit him with it.

Failing the speed of his wings, he could transform into a human boulder and rampage forward, crushing her before she had the chance to successfully launch her attack. With subpar martial skills, she would not have the tools to counter the attack.

8 Would Lose - Sakkon/Ukkon

Much like Kiba, Sakkon and Ukkon's abilities are a hard counter to Choji's. They are able to erect great gates which would obfuscate his gigantic ball or super expansion jutsu, forcing him to rely on direct melee combat instead.

This plays into their hands, as one of the clones is able to infiltrate his body and slowly destroy the proteins from the inside. Given Choji's gentle nature, it's difficult to see him using the only means of escape in time ~ by physically carving his opponent out of his body, injuring himself in the process.

7 Could Beat - Shino

Shino naruto

Against ordinary ninja, Shino's chakra devouring insects pose one of the most terrifying and significant threats ever borne from Konoha's promising youth. However, against Choji, they're fairly useless due to to the nature of his jutsu.

Akimichi's ball transformation and subsequent rolling would render it impossible for any of them to cling on his body, simultaneously posing a threat to their master. Given Shino's fairly average agility feats, it's unlikely he would be able to dodge Choji's attacks indefinitely, especially if the latter should include his kunai in his human boulder.

6 Would Lose - Naruto Uzumaki

Choji fails against Naruto Uzumaki simply for the fact that he has no means of thwarting the knucklehead ninja's awe inspiring power. Naruto was able to face down Madara, defeat Pain by himself, and even fight Sasuke Uchiha to a standstill despite the latter's manipulation of the Jinchuriki.

Between summoning dozens of shadow clones and creating devastating Rasengans, it would be impossible for Choji to take him down, especially should the latter consider him a threat to the village. His super expansion jutsu pales in comparison to the wrath of Kaguya and others ~ opponents which Naruto has resiliently endured.

5 Could Beat - Hinata

Hinata's gentle fists techniques work more like a rapier than a sledgehammer, strategically synthesizing her knowledge of pressure points with her Byakugan to disable opponents. This may be useful against Choji's super expansion jutsu, partial expansion jutsu, and possibly even his butterfly form, but his human boulder is his ace in the hole.

Should he remain in that state, Hinata lacks the brute strength to stop him from crushing her flat. Her gentle fists would deflect off of his tremendous rolling bulk, skewering her on his kunai in the process.

4 Would Lose - Gaara

Gaara with a straight face in Naruto

Gaara is one of the few opponents that would be able to withstand Choji's inexorable assault, even in his butterfly form. He is able to concentrate his sand so densely around his body that it becomes harder than steel, a ward that even Sasuke Uchiha struggled to penetrate.

His offense is equally formidable. With Gaara's sand assuming a variety of shapes, he can create spikes in Choji's path, throw off his trajectory, or simply fly into the air and force him to rely on his partial or super expansion jutsu. From there, he would put him in a sand coffin ~ one limb at a time, if necessary.

3 Could Beat - Tenten

tenten is in a fight in naruto

Tenten's progression throughout the anime's runtime was unfortunately meager. While she was able to unleash heavy iron balls and small lakes (the latter which exhausted her), neither would be able to stop Choji's human boulder or expansion jutsu.

The weapons she might summon from her scroll would bounce harmlessly off Akimichi's body, lacking the power and consistency of Gaara's sand spikes to punch through his skin. What Tenten possesses in skill, she lacks in physical force. It makes her defeat inevitable.

2 Would Lose - Temari

Temari on fan

Temari's fan provides a variety of attacks that would make it difficult for Choji to contend with. With it, she is able to soar across the sky, forcing Choji to rely on partial or super expansion jutsu to deal meaningful damage.

However, the eldest sand sibling's offense is just as ruthless. With a single stroke of her weapon, she can conjure slicing winds, dicing her opponents all over their body. This would turn Choji's large form against him, as he gives her more area to slice.

1 Could Beat - Kiba

kiba petting akamaru

Kiba's "Fang Over Fang" and Choji's boulder work in fundamentally similar ways. They are each unstoppable physical attacks which devastate the many opponents they strike. Under the assumption they are equally deadly, Akimichi's other abilities are more than enough to defeat Kiba.

His wings and expansion jutsu allow him to fight intelligently and tactically, whereas Kiba's beast transformation renders him a sloppy (albeit devastating) brute. Should Choji use his speed to his advantage, he would be able to overcome the two headed hound, concentrating his chakra into a fist that would put down the dog.
