Living harmoniously is an important part of village life. In Naruto, the hidden villages are filled with countless people from different clans. Though there are obvious differences in appearances and abilities, the majority of the population strives to do what’s best for their home as well as their fellow villagers.
Unfortunately, some don't adopt this same belief. There are honorable shinobi, rogue ninjas, criminal masterminds, and well-meaning kunoichi that have displayed selfish behavior. Naruto is filled with characters that have prioritized their objectives at someone else's expense. These selfish characters have used their influence and prowess to facilitate their desires.
10 Sasuke Was Always Sakura's Main Concern
When Sakura Haruno was first enrolled in the Ninja Academy, she was solely focused on getting Sasuke's attention. As her character developed, her obsession with Sasuke intensified. This would often cause her to mistreat Naruto or ignore him completely.
As a member of Team 7, Sakura prioritized her feelings for Sasuke over their missions. Even when Sasuke became a wanted criminal, she allowed her personal feelings to prevent her from using her strength to subdue him. Though her character is now a loving wife and mother, Sakura's selfish obsession initially caused strife, and discomfort among her peers.
9 Kabuto Made A Lifestyle Out Of Manipulation
Kabuto's dedication to Orochimaru caused him to manipulate and murder unsuspecting victims. When fans are first introduced to Kabuto, he posed as a ninja attempting to pass the infamous Chunin Exams. Kabuto's true agenda was to spy on Orochimaru's next victim, Sasuke Uchiha.
This was the first of many heinous crimes fans would witness. Kabuto's commitment to chaos caused him to help Orochimaru attack the Hidden Leaf Village, participate in the nearly fatal brawl between the three Legendary Sanin, and revive notably strong shinobi to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces in the Fourth Great Ninja War.
8 Pain Wanted To Inflict As Much Suffering As Possible
Nagato's painful and traumatic past lead him to become the formidable villain Pain. Pain was the frontman of the Akatsuki and facilitated the abduction of the Tailed Beasts. Pain's most afflictive crimes were killing Jiraiya and demolishing the Hidden Leaf Village.
These two events had a lasting effect on the rest of the series and permanently devastated fans. Nagato experienced tremendous sadness during the Third Ninja War – he lost his parents and his best friend Yahiko. Nagato's suffering was undeniable, but it didn't excuse his desire to make everyone around him feel as much pain and heartache as he did.
7 Hidan Enjoyed Feeling Pain & Death From Others
Hidan worshipped the wicked god Jashin and was obsessed with his faith. When Hidan and his partner Kakuzu successfully obtained the two tails Matatabi, Hidan insisted on killing her jinchūriki Yugito while performing his religious ritual. He used his religious beliefs as an excuse for his blood lust.
Hidan's Cursed Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood Jutsu required him to ingest his victim's blood and draw a Jashin symbol on the ground. Once he did, he was physically connected to his opponent – injuring himself would also injure his victim. Hidan's enjoyment of the pain he felt was disturbing. His favorite part was delivering a fatal attack. He was immortal and loved feeling death through his victims.
6 Money Formed The Blueprint For Kakuzu's Morality
Kakuzu was one of the Akatsuki's most uncommitted members. While he did help capture the Two Tails Matatabi, he was always more concerned with his own plans. Kakuzu valued money above anything else.
His greed kept him focused on a bounty list. Kakuzu sought out the people on the bounty list in order to murder them and trade them for money on the black market. While out with his partner Hidan, he would force him to visit grungy secret drop-offs to collect his rewards. Moreover, his violent temper caused him to kill his previous partners and keep their hearts to elongate his life.
5 Madara Wanted To Establish His Own View Of Peace
Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju grew up in the Warring States Period. They were both child soldiers who witnessed a time of constant war and violence. Madara and Hashirama suffered great losses during the war. Three of Madara’s brothers were killed, while Hashirama lost two of his brothers, who were only 7 and 10 at the time of their deaths.
After years of fighting, Madara and Hashirama founded Konohagakure to establish peace among their clans. Though this did bring an end to war, their dream was short-lived as Madara and Hashirama disagreed on how to maintain peace. Madara believed other villages should be controlled, while Hashirama wanted to reason with them. Though he ultimately wanted peace, Madara couldn’t escape the Uchiha clan's violent nature. He preferred to intimidate and tyrannize the people around him.
4 Sasuke Was Consumed With Revenge For Most Of The Series
Sasuke Uchiha was motivated by revenge throughout Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. Initially, he focused on killing his brother Itachi for murdering his entire clan but later set his vengeful eye on Konoha when he learned the truth about his brother. Sasuke left with Orochimaru despite the objections from his loved ones. He believed that in order to become strong enough to defeat his brother he had to leave.
Sasuke did everything he could to distance himself from his comrades once he left. He taunted them with cruel words and tried to kill Naruto and Sakura. After he discovered Itachi's heroic motives, he vowed to destroy the Leaf Village. Revenge was Sasuke's main motivation throughout his youth, and he didn't care who he had to hurt or kill to achieve his goals.
3 Danzo Was An Extremist That Pushed His Own Agenda At Any Cost
As one of Konoha's elders, Danzo was entrusted with the village's political issues. While Danzo believed he always acted in Konoha's best interest, he committed horrible crimes to execute his plans. During the Third Shinobi War, he concluded that the Hidden Rain Village and the Akatsuki's alliance was a threat to Konoha – though neither party had any intention of harming the Leaf Village. Danzo caused them to turn on each other, and he indirectly played a part in Yahiko's death.
Danzo continued with his nefarious methods when he prevented Shisui from using his Mangekyō Sharingan to convince his clan to call off their coup d'état by stealing his right eye. When Sasuke confronted Danzo for his crimes against the Uchiha, it was revealed that Danzo stole 10 Sharingan eyes and had them embedded into his right arm. Danzo hurt and betrayed several people to protect Konoha. While he convinced himself that his duty to his village was his main priority, his actions showed that he was more concerned with self-preservation than anything else.
2 Orochimaru Committed Heinous Crimes To Achieve His Sinister Goal
Orochimaru was one of the Leaf Village's greatest enemies. Though he was a member of Konoha, he didn't have any emotional attachments to his former home. He conveyed this indifference when he attacked Konoha. He orchestrated a collaboration between the Sound and Sand village. Though his takeover failed, it forced the Third Hokage to sacrifice his life to stop him.
Throughout his villainous journey, he kidnapped innumerable people and performed painful experiments on them. Orochimaru's Leaf Village attack and kidnappings were only a few of several atrocities. He did these things to achieve perfection. Orochimaru was on a quest to find immortality and eternal youth. He even kidnapped children and branded them with his curse mark to prepare their bodies to become his new vessel. Thankfully, Orochimaru met his match when he attempted to possess Sasuke.
1 Kaguya Became An Evil Tyrant That Only Desired Power
Kaguya was a supernatural being that landed on Earth and made it her new home. When she came in contact with the God Tree she decided to eat its fruit despite her clan's wishes. In doing so she became chakra's originator. After gaining immense power Kaguya ruled over Earth and ended wars. Over time however, she started to use her jutsu to instill fear in people or manipulate them.
Kaguya eventually gave birth to twin boys, Hagoromo and Hamura, who grew up to see the error of her ways. She selfishly wanted all chakra to herself and planned to kill her sons. Hagoromo and Hamura were able to stop her but not before she created Black Zetsu, a materialized version of her will. Black Zetsu was behind most of the major events from the start of the series and it used Obito, Madara, and countless others to resurrect her. Kaguya's greed was so strong that she was able to create a being whose sole purpose was to ensure her desires were met.
