When it comes to a series like Naruto, it’s weird to consider the fact that there are romantic relationships between any of the characters. Since it’s a ninja anime, it’s probably safe to assume that for the most part, the characters are wrapped up in action and adventure plotlines, with no particular time or inclination for romance.

10 Who Was Naruto’s First Crush?: Sakura
Sakura Haruno is Naruto’s first reported crush in Naruto. The two become teammates on Team Seven after they graduate from the Ninja Academy, along with Sasuke and their teacher Kakashi. Despite treating her politely and often blushing when talking to her, Sakura barely notices Naruto, and when she does, she treats him poorly. She is too wrapped up in trying to get Sasuke to pay attention to her instead. Ironically, Sasuke treats her with the same dismissal that she treats Naruto with.

Sakura tries to convince Naruto not to go after Sasuke again to try to bring him back to Konoha, fearing for his safety, by falsely confessing her love for him. She thinks that he is going after him just because he promised her that he would successfully bring Sasuke home. But Naruto doesn’t believe her and rejects both her confession and her proposal that they abandon Sasuke. He says that bringing him back now has nothing to do with his promise to her to do so.

While it’s not clear exactly how much time has passed between Naruto’s confession of his feelings to Hinata and their actual wedding, there are clues to when the nuptials happen in relation to some of the other big happenings in the series. Naruto and Hinata get married in the last arc of Naruto Shippuden, in the series, after the defeat of Madara, Obito, and Kaguya and right after Kakashi takes over as the Sixth Hokage.

It’s only later when he thinks about how Hinata has always been there for him, cheering him on, that he realizes he also wants to be with her forever and shares his feelings with her.

The two characters don’t know each other very well when they were genin, since no one made a point to be friendly with Naruto while they were at the Ninja Academy and, after they graduate, they’re on different teams. But Naruto does tell Hinata that he always thought of her as being gloomy and weird (which makes sense since Hinata’s crush on him often made her shy around him). After her encouraging words before he faces Neji in the Chunin Exam finals, Naruto tells her he’s decided he likes her.

This means starting to eat better, including more vegetables in his diet, and reining in some of his more impulsive tendencies to avoid getting hurt.

Hinata faces off with Pain immediately after confessing her feelings to Naruto. She is wildly out of her league when it comes to fighting Pain, and it doesn’t take him long to knock her out. Naruto thinks that she is dead at this point, and he goes into a rage. This causes him to burst into his six-tail form. On top of this, the power of his emotions makes him almost susceptible to the Nine-Tails manipulation, and he almost releases the demon altogether.

Before he comes to recognize Hinata as someone that he might love, Naruto is fairly interested in his teammate Sakura. This is partially because Sakura has a crush on Sasuke and this is another way for Naruto to compete with him by trying to win her affections. In order to try to get a kiss from Sakura, he uses a jutsu to pose as Sasuke. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Sakura, Naruto drank bad milk with his breakfast and has to run off to the bathroom.

Naruto confesses his love to Hinata and is surprised by her reaction, since she flushes and runs off without responding. It turns out that she’s considering marrying a man named Toneri, who unfortunately doesn’t seem to have Hinata’s consent to the marriage in mind. Naruto spends three days unconscious, attended to by Sakura, and wakes up too distraught to go on. He feels that if Hinata is marrying someone else, there’s no reason to keep living, an ironic viewpoint for someone like Naruto, who is so determined to reach his goals.
