The Hyuga clan is a powerful family that lives in the village of Konoha in the Naruto world. They are known for their powerful Byakugan. With their powerful eyes, they can see through solid objects. They also have the ability to see nearly 360 degrees around them, a skill that would be helpful on the battlefield.

They go to great lengths to keep their Byakugan safe. Some of the members of the clan are forced to become subservient as members of the Hyuga branch family. The clan is ruled over by a leader, who often has to make terribly hard decisions for the sake of the clan. The Hyuga are a bit mysterious about their abilities, but this allows their secrets to remain secrets.

10 Meaning Behind The Clan Name & Symbol

Naruto's Neji Hyuga Byakugan Eye

The Hyuga name means "a place in the sun." This name likely relates to the clan's ability to reveal things with their Byakugan, as the sun's light also reveals things. Masashi Kishimoto often gives importance to the names and clan symbols of characters.

The Hyuga clan symbol looks like a flame inside something that looks a bit like a fan. An official explanation of this symbol has never been given, but there is a theory. The clan's symbol likely represents chakra being trapped. This theory fits perfectly with the Hyuga's ability.

9 Divisions In Clan Are Based On Otsutsuki Tradition

Naruto Hiashi Hyuga Clan

One of the first things revealed about the Hyuga family is that they are broken into two divisions. The main family rules while the branch family are forced to serve the main family.

This system has existed for many generations. The system stems from the Otsutsuki Clan, who are some of the Hyuga's most ancient ancestors. The Otsutsuki seem to have given the Hyuga both this system and the Byakugan. Many expressed discomfort with the Hyuga's divided system, but it went unchanged until the death of Neji Hyuga.

8 Able To Channel Their Chakra In A Unique Way

The Gentle Fist technique is the well-known fighting style exclusive to the Hyuga family. While the fighting style looks unimpressive, it can cause a lot of damage which is how it gets its name.

Members of the Hyuga family are able to draw their chakra in a unique way allowing them to use this technique. This is a genetic ability exclusive to the Hyuga clan. While Boruto didn't inherit the Byakugan, he seems to be able to have the Hyuga's chakra control and has been trained to fight using the Gentle Fist style.

7 Based On Real Fighting Style

The Gentle Fist technique is based on a real fighting style. The style is known as Baguazhang in Chinese and Hakkesho in Japanese. Hakkesho uses circular motions that allow the fighter to strike quicker with good momentum. Flexibility is the key to this fighting style.

The name Baguazhang translates into English as '"eight trigram palm." These words will be familiar to anyone who watches Naruto as Neji often uses the phrase eight trigram palm when he is fighting.

6 The Byakugan's Involvement In Hyuga Medicine

Chakra paths Naruto

Every Jutsu in Naruto is powered by chakra. The Hyuga's Byakugan allows them to see into the body almost like an x-ray. This has allowed the Hyuga family to study the inner workings of the body in a special way.  The Hyuga can use their abilities to cause damage, but can also use their abilities to heal.

Hinata is shown using her Byakugan and chakra control to heal in a handful of situations.  Hinata also gifts Naruto a special ointment during the events of the Chunin Exams.  The ointment is actually a secret Hyuga clan recipe.  There's no telling what incredible healing techniques the Hyuga might be hiding.

5 Exclusive Attacks For Members Of The Main Family

Every clan in Naruto has attacks that are exclusive to their clan. The powerful Uchiha Clan are associated with fire. The Uzumaki are known for their high chakra levels and sealing jutsu.

The Hyuga also have exclusive attacks, usually these attacks begin with eight trigrams. In the Hyuga clan, only members of the main family are allowed to learn these exclusive attacks. Neji decided not to follow these rules, he managed to learn his clans secret jutsu just by observing them in use.

4 Impact & Secret Behind The Hyuga Affair

Hizashi Hyuga

The Hyuga Affair was an event that sparked a change in the Hyuga Clan. An enemy ninja attempted to kidnap the three-year-old Hinata Hyuga. The attack turned out to be set-up. In the end, Konoha was being threatened. If they wanted peace, they would have to turn over the body of Hinata's father, Hiashi.

However, it was Hinata's uncle that went in his twin brother's place. The death of his brother had a significant effect on Hiashi. The results of this incident will eventually change the way the Hyuga clan is run. The truth of this event was also kept a secret.

3 Marriage Within The Family Is Common

The Hyuga clan is a large extended family. The clan tends to marry within the family. This likely increases the likelihood of children to inherit the Byakugan and the Hyuga's unique chakra control.

A fan theory states that Hinata might have been betrothed to her first cousin Neji. If true, this could have caused an issue since Hinata was once the heir to the Hyuga family and Neji was a member of the branch family. After Hinata's sister became the heir, the plan might have been to marry Hinata to her cousin Neji and force her into a life in the branch family.

2 Clan Heirs In Boruto & Himawari

Boruto Himawari and Hinata looking through a book together

Hinata was born the heir to the Hyuga clan. Her family eventually decided she was too weak to lead. Her sister, Hanabi then became the heir. In Boruto, Hanabi is often seen with her father and seems to serve in an official capacity. Though she is likely still the heir, she is allowed to go on missions. This is something the heir normally wouldn't be allowed to do.

The future of the Hyuga clan may lie with Boruto and Himawari. Hanabi doesn't have any children, so the Hyuga clan may someday be ruled by someone who doesn't even bear the Hyuga name.

1 Tenseigan Can Be Achieved By Stealing The Byakugan

Naruto The Last Toneri Otsutsuki Hinata Hyuga

The Tenseigan is a rare evolution of the Byakugan. This special eye can be obtained by a member of the Otsutsuki Clan being implanted with the Byakugan from a member of the Hyuga Clan. Toneri Otsutsuki managed to obtain the Tenseigan by stealing the eyes of Hanabi Hyuga.

A popular Naruto fan theory is that Toneri also somehow messed with Hinata's genetics. If true, Toneri could have affected not only any children Hinata might have but also the genetics of any future Hyuga Clan leader. After all, fans still don't know if Toneri's Tenseigan had any lasting effect on Hanabi's eyes or genetics.
