As Game of Thrones prepares to release its eighth and final season, its currently prequel series readies itself to begin production.

Actor Naomi Watts, who was the first person announced for the upcoming HBO prequel's cast, has publicly commented about joining the dark fantasy franchise for the first time at Sundance Film Festival this weekend.

"I think there’s so many brilliant elements to [Game of Thrones] that make it very exciting, very appealing. I don’t want to dig myself into a big hole here," admitted Watts in an interview with Variety. "All I want to say is it’s very exciting…I’ll say that again and again and again and nothing else."

Details on the prequel series and Watts' character are still under wraps but her character is reportedly a Westeros socialite hiding her own dark secrets.

"I know it’s pretty huge and that might take some adjusting, but there’s a reason for that fandom," continued Watts. "I think it’s just so well done.”

Written by Jane Goldman, who also serves as showrunner, the pilot for the prequel series stars Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse with principal photography expected to begin sometime in early 2019.
