The CW released a first look at its upcoming Naomi series at DC FanDome, and it provides its own spin on a key encounter between the titular hero and Superman.

The clip, which you can see below, shows Naomi McDuffie (Kaci Walfall) in class about to start a presentation when she gets a text from her friend, Annabelle (Mary-Charles Jones), saying that a stunt involving Superman is going on in the town square. Naomi rushes out to the fight, skateboarding through the school to get there faster. However, once Naomi arrives, she swoons and falls to the ground. While looking up at the sky, she sees Superman speed past overhead. It's not clear from the footage who plays the Man of Steel.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell, Naomi debuted in a 2019 self-titled series. As a young girl living in Port Oswego, Oregon, Naomi sees a battle between Superman and Mongul, likely what's being referenced in the above footage. This sets her on a path that helps her discover both what happened to her biological parents and how she received her energy-based powers. Eventually, Naomi actually teams up with Superman and Young Justice.

While Naomi isn't a particularly old character, progress on her first live-action series has been quite quick. Reports surfaced in 2020 that Selma director Ava DuVernay was developing an adaptation of Naomi for The CW. The potential show was soon given a pilot and, in May of this year, The CW ordered the project to series. While an exact release date for the series has not yet been given, filming began in August. Assuming the best, Naomi should meet its expected release window of 2022.

Naomi is the latest in a long line of superhero projects to premiere on The CW. Collectively called the Arrowverse/CWverse, the network's shared superhero universe began with Arrow in 2012. While that series came to an end with Season 8 in 2020, several of the shows related to it are still airing, including The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. There have also been a number of new series set in the Arrowverse, including Batwoman and Superman & Lois. At this time, it's not totally clear if, or how, Naomi will connect to those other superhero series.
