The CW's new series Naomi will feature a down-to-earth teenager, but the show will also have some out-of-this-world cosmic characters DC fans might know.

In an interview with EW, showrunner Jill Blankenship spoke about balancing the ordinary and the cosmic aspects in the series. "We're telling these grounded high school stories in the midst of this epic cosmic struggle," said Blankenship. "We are going deep. I'm confident DC fans will be pleasantly surprised with our cosmic cameos. Over the season, Naomi's world expands in such a huge way."

The trailer for Naomi shows the titular character (played by Kaci Walfall) in her northwestern town when a supernatural event takes place. Superman quickly flies overhead, and she witnesses an incident between him and an unknown enemy. Naomi discovers that she's gained mysterious powers and will have to uncover her potentially cosmic origin all while dealing with school, her friends, her family and a group seeking to use her powers for their own agenda.

The character of Dee (Alexander Wraith) has his own cosmic origin and will have a pivotal role in this story. He's a tattoo artist and winged warrior from the planet Thanagar, serving as Naomi's mentor as he teaches her how to harness her newfound powers. Both Hawkman and Hawkgirl come from Thanagar, which is known for its Nth metal and hawk-like inhabitants, and they've already appeared in the Arrowverse, notably in the first season of Legends of Tomorrow.

In the series, the comic book-loving Naomi runs a popular fansite dedicated to Superman and his heroic deeds. Kal-El was born on the planet Krypton and has had his share of cosmic adventures, but the Man of Steel won't just be fan service. Naomi's love for Superman indicates a deeper connection, as his story is a part of hers and vice versa.

The character of Naomi was created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell, and made her first appearance in the Wonder Comics imprint in 2019. When her powers started to manifest following a battle in her town between Superman and Mongul, she began investigating her true origin and learning how to use her flight, super-strength and energy-based powers. She eventually discovered where her cosmic abilities originated from, and joined the reformed Young Justice. The next season of the Naomi comic from Bendis, Walker and Campbell will arrive in 2022.

It was announced in December 2020 that Ava DuVernay would adapt the comic book series to TV. In May 2021, Naomi was given a full series order.

Naomi premieres Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST on The CW.
