Namorita Is Alive! Or Is She?

Namorita Is Alive! Or Is She?

In every installment of “If I Pass This Way Again,” we look at odd comic book plot points that were rarely (sometimes NEVER!) mentioned again after they were first introduced.

Reader Oscar O. wanted to know what the deal was with Namorita’s return from the dead in 2010.

In “Civil War” #1 (by Mark Millar, Steve McNiven and Dexter Vines), Namorita was killed alongside her fellow New Warriors…

Years later, in the final storyline in their acclaimed run on “Nova,” writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (along with artist Andrea Di Vito), sent Nova into a battle between two different Sphinxes (from different points in time) in the Fault, the hole in time and space that had been a major part of Abnett and Lanning’s Marvel Cosmic stories. In the story, Nova and Darkhawk teamed up with a time-displaced Reed Richards and Black Bolt, but at the end of “Nova” #32, we see that yet another time-displaced hero joined them…

We saw in the next issue that this Namorita was from a time when she and Nova were dating in the New Warriors (and before her skin turned blue)…

The idea was that all of the heroes would go back to their own times when this thing was finished, but when it came time to send Namorita back, Nova balked…

And he was happy to see that she remained in the present at the end of the issue…

The “Nova” series then ended and went into the “Thanos Imperative” miniseries, where the heroes of the Marvel Cosmos were battling with an invasion from the denizens of the evil “Cancerverse” (basically evil undead versions of a bunch of heroes). These villains captured Namorita, but in “Thanos Imperative” #4 (by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Miguel Sepulveda), her boyfriend came to rescue her…

In “Thanos Imperative” #5, Nova has to go into the Cancerverse on what could be a suicide mission. He says goodbye to Namorita…

And, sure enough, he and Star-Lord sacrifice themselves to cut the Cancerverse off from our universe. Namorita is one many people who honored the sacrifice of Nova and Star-Lord…

A year later, Star-Lord came back from the Cancerverse, but he later revealed that Nova stayed behind.

That was in 2010. That was the last time we saw that version of Namorita alive.

The last time she was even REFERENCED as being alive happened in 2014’s “New Warriors” #6 (by Chris Yost, David Baldeon, Jordi Tarragona, and Nick Roche), when Water Snake mentions that she was looking for Namorita, who she insists has returned from the dead…

But that’s it. When asked about it years ago, Tom Brevoort noted that he hoped that she just ended up going back to her time, as he did not think that her return did much good, especially since no one else chose to pick up from Abnett and Lanning, so she was just sort of…out there. It definitely IS weird that she apparently is just out there not doing anything, even as Richard Rider has apparently returned to life. It appears as though everyone is mostly following Brevoort’s lead and just sort of assuming that she eventually simply returned to her time like Reed and Black Bolt at the end of the “Nova” storyline.

At this point, it would almost be TOO complicated to suddenly bring her back into the story, as you’d have to do one heck of a job to explain where she’s been all of these years.

Thanks to Oscar for suggesting this one. If anyone else has a suggestion for a little-remembered short-lived comic book plot point, drop me a line at and maybe I’ll feature it in a future installment of If I Pass This Way Again!
