WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Avengers #32 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Francesco Manna, Jason Keith and VC's Cory Petit, on sale Wednesday, March 11.

A character that has flip-flopped between hero and villain on numerous occasions is Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Namor was a longtime ally of Captain America and Bucky Barnes as part of the original Invaders, and is one of Marvel's oldest characters. As the King of Atlantis, Namor has to put the interest of his people ahead of his friends and former teammates in the superhero community, which oftentimes leads to unavoidable conflict.

Namor has been a member of both the Avengers and X-Men, most recently co-starring in X-Men: Red with Jean Grey's team using Atlantis as their base of operations. However, actions taken against Atlantis by the evil Roxxon Corporation have caused Namor to attack the surface world yet again, bringing the king into direct conflict with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Instead of this being an uneven fight with Marvel's premier super-team battling one lone man, Namor brought backup in his newly-formed Defenders of the Deep. The altercation ended in a stalemate, with the Avengers moving on to other threats from the resurrected Agent Phil Coulson and his new Squadron Supreme of America, the demon Mephisto, Russia's Winter Guard and the rise of vampires led by Dracula. And remember, this also doesn't include the Marvel crossover event, War of the Realms.

So far, the Avengers have been able to keep these threats at bay, but a preview of Avengers #32 teases the beginning of an unholy union between these villains, with Namor as the first recruit.

The preview begins with the day Namor was named King of Atlantis, and the gigantic celebration that followed. Namor is shown riding valiantly atop two sea turtles in his classic costume with the short tights. We then catch up with Namor in the present-day and the updated costume he debuted in 2018's Avengers #9.

As the king of the seas, all marine life should be under Namor's rule, but the Avengers #32 preview features him fighting a group of dolphins with Roxxon cybernetics. This is something that hits too close to home for Namor, only enraging him more. That's probably why we end the preview with Namor drowning his sorrows at the Davy Jones Saloon. Though it's not shown, someone will present King Namor with a proposition he won't be able to refuse, especially since it will mean getting revenge on those who have wronged him on the surface world.

This league of bad guys dubbed "Earth's Mightiest Villains" won't be the first group of this nature that Namor has sided with. He has been a part of two separate Cabals with villains such as Doctor Doom, Loki, Norman Osborn and Thanos. Plus after Namor's actions in the Invaders 12-issue miniseries, he might as well officially break bad by turning over to the dark side.
