Once the smoke clears from this upcoming batch of "Mythbusters" episodes, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage will drive off into the sunset -- in a normal car, this time, not one that's rigged to explode/flip/spin/etc. As reported by Deadline, the Discovery Channel has announced that "Mythbusers," their longest-running series, will conclude its epic 13-year run with the the upcoming 2016 season. The duo of special effects experts will leave in their wake (as Deadline puts it) 248 episodes, 2950 experiments, 1050 myths, and 900 explosions.

“Making Mythbusters has fundamentally and irrevocably altered the way I think as a person, as an artist, and as a scientist," said Savage in a statement. "I’m glad for the chance to say goodbye with some of the best television we’ve ever made. I will miss making this show.”

“I never dreamed we would be on television at all, much less for such a long time and with so much praise for keeping a thought provoking show on the air," said Savage's partner-in-explosions Hyneman. "And best of all, we were able to do what we do and still have all our fingers and toes."

The show launched in January 2003 with a catchy premise -- putting popular myths (like how many germs are on a dollar bill?) to the test. They've since expanded their brand to include busting myths as depicted popular TV shows and movies, everything from James Bond to "Breaking Bad." While Discovery makes it clear that they're open for a future revival, the show as we know it is -- for all intents and purposes -- done after this season. Deadline notes that Hyneman and Savage are moving into scripted fare and are executive producing a spy drama that's in development at CBS.

“The Mythbusters library will be moving over to Discovery’s sister network in 2016, where I know audiences new and old alike will be able to experience and learn with Adam and Jamie and the rest of the Mythbusters family,” said Rich Ross, Group President, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel.

"Mythbusters" begins its final season on January 9.
