Mystery Science Theater 3000 has released an official trailer for its upcoming 13th season, which will debut Friday, May 6 on a brand-new platform called the Gizmoplex.
The MST3K Season 13 trailer promises "13 brand-new episodes, including some of the cheesiest movies ever." The films that will be featured this season include 1969's Santo in the Treasure of Dracula, 1992's Doctor Mordrid, 1967's The Million Eyes of Sumuru and 2014's The Christmas Dragon, among several others.
"As the show returns for its lucky 13th season, the Mads -- Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day), loyal henchman Max (Patton Oswalt), and grandmother Pearl Forrester (Mary Jo Pehl) -- introduce the show's biggest, maddest experiment yet!" an official release reads.
"Many familiar faces will be returning, including Jonah Ray and creator Joel Hodgson, along with some exciting new cast members," it continues. "Thanks to a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign started by Joel Hodgson and supported by fans of the show, the new season will be self-distributed via an online theater called the Gizmoplex. The Gizmoplex will be making its public debut with three days of new episode premieres beginning on May 6th."
The format of MST3K involves a test subject (i.e. host) being forced by mad scientists to watch a series of bad B movies until they are driven completely insane. The show initially premiered on KTMA-TV (now WUCW) in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1988. It went on to air on a number of other television channels over the years, including The Comedy Channel, Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy).
MST3K concluded its initial 10-season run while airing on the Sci-Fi Channel in 1999. Following an 18-year absence, the show returned for an 11th season on Netflix in 2017. A 12th season subsequently dropped on Netflix in 2018, though the streaming platform ultimately passed on Season 13.
For its upcoming 13th season, the show jumps to the Gizmoplex, a new platform "built just for MST3K." The Season 13 trailer encourages fans to "reserve your season pass now and get new MST3K every other week all year long." Potential subscribers can get more information at MST3K.com/Season13.
