Myst is the flagship video game from development studio Cyan and one of the most memorable games from the '90s. It set the stage for adventure games and, for nearly a decade, the record for best-selling computer game. While Myst holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, it's hard to deny that, in the nearly three decades since its release, graphics and interfaces have improved substantially, and returning to the point-and-click full-motion video of the original can be a bit a jarring. That's why many fans are excited about Cyan's announcement of a virtual reality Myst re-developed for the Unreal Engine.

The original Myst drops the player through a starry void onto a mysterious deserted island. Guided by notes left in burned books or hidden in communication devices, the player pieces together the mystery that has left the island abandoned, solving puzzles to uncover the drama and betrayal underneath it all. Fans loved the sometimes punishing design of these puzzles, but also the the environments created to contextualize them. Cyan developed a whole unique group of people and language, called D'Ni, and much of the game involves exploring the vestiges of this culture.

The VR version of Myst plans to deliver on the love for the game's setting and aesthetics. Rendering the worlds in three dimensions using the Oculus Quest platform, players can feel like they are truly inhabiting the island. By re-building the game from the ground up using the Unreal Engine, interaction with the world promises to be even more immersive.

While the biggest draw of this new release of Myst is the enhanced graphics and VR support, it also promises brand new art and sound work for a substantially updated experience. The game will also include optional puzzle randomization, allowing for improved replay value.

This isn't the first time that Cyan has given Myst a makeover. In 2000, it released Myst: Masterpiece Edition, updating the game's graphics, sound and score. This was followed later that year with realMyst: Interactive 3D Edition, which introduced free-roaming gameplay to the point-and-click adventure game. realMyst received its own Masterpiece Edition in 2014, upgrading the game to the Unity engine and substantially revamping the graphics again.  Despite announcing the development of a new VR game Firmament in 2018, Cyan seems to have devoted most of its attention to tweaking the Myst series.

VR Myst will initially be released only for the Oculus Quest VR platform, with subsequent releases for other VR systems and traditional PCs. The new version of Myst promises to be the definitive modern experience, immersing the player in the surrealistic environments of the game. Myst seems to be a game that was destined for a VR version, with so much of the fan support linked to the worlds that the game creates. Inviting players fully into the island is a dream come true for many fans.
