My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Series Introduces Lesbian Couple

In "The Last Crusade," the next episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Bloom will meet Scootaloo's parents: Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty. Voiced by Jackie Blackmore and Saffron Henderson respectively, Holiday and Lofty will appear as the series' first on-screen lesbian couple.

Writer-producer Michael Vogel confirmed the news on Twitter. He shared fan art of Scootaloo's aunts with the comment, "What a cute couple!!!!!" Asked to elaborate, he added, "When I say 'cute couple' I'm saying that Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are a cute couple. Yes."

According to The Beat, Holiday and Lofty were already introduced in Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe, a 2017 media tie-in prose book. However, "The Last Crusade" will be the couple's on-screen debut. The episode, which answers a longtime series mystery, already aired overseas.

"I think it’s fantastic that we can show that what truly defines a family is love -- that, to me, is the core of My Little Pony," showrunner Nicole Dubuc told BuzzFeed News.

"Nicole and I thought this was a great opportunity to organically introduce an LGBTQ couple in the series, and we asked Hasbro and they approved it," Vogel added. "My Little Pony has always been about friendship and accepting people (or ponies) that are different from you. So it just felt like something important to do."

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic airs Saturdays at 11:30 am ET/PT on Discovery Family. "The Last Crusade," which airs June 15, finds "Unexpected visitors arriving in Ponyville to try and break up the Cutie Mark Crusaders forever."
