What is it that makes a property like My Hero Academia so special? Is it author Kohei Horikoshi's insanely unique art style? His absurdly detailed, likable, and dynamic characters? Or maybe even the fact that everyone just loves a good superpower-based setting? Well, it is all those things, but really it all comes down to Quirks. Quirks are a fresh take on the concept of "super-powers", even though that's basically what they really are. Quirks can be trained, they're wacky, and they're vague. Sometimes a Quirk can be cliche and boring like super strength, and other times it's as off-the-walls as can be like a kid who has a cannon for a tongue! Quirks are well...quirky! So let's take a look at some of the quirkiest ones of all time!
10 Emi "Ms. Joke" Fukukado: Laughter Is Justice?
Emi Fukukado is the hilarious foil to Aizawa that shows up during the Pro Hero License arc. She, like Eraser Head, is a teacher at a prestigious Hero School called Ketsubutsu Academy and an active Pro Hero herself. Her Quirk called Outburst is honestly still a bit of a mystery. Basically she causes Villains to burst out laughing which completely impairs their cognitive and motor functions. It's still unclear if she has to make the Villain laugh in order for her Quirk to take effect, or if the Quirk itself can make anyone laugh, but in any case, it isn't a very combat-centric ability.
9 Tsunagu "Best Jeanist" Hakamata: A Kill La Kill Character In The Wrong Universe
One of the top-ranking heroes in all of Japan, Tsunagu Hakamata, otherwise known as Best Jeanist, is the premier example of Quirk underestimation. Hakamata's Quirk is called Fiber Master, and it's no joke. Basically, any piece of clothing is a weapon to Jeanist, as he can manipulate the fibers inside the apparel in anyway he likes. Obviously, Denim works better, which is the reason for his Hero alias, but it seems like the requirements for Jeanist's power is pretty vague. He can make threads stronger, manipulate giant steel "threads", and even control hundreds of them at once. He's absolutely the icon to look towards for someone with a stereotypically underestimated power.
8 Nagamasa Mora: A Barber's Worst Nightmare
The class president from Shiketsu High School, it's Nagamasa Mora! Out of everyone from that prestigious school, we wouldn't have expected Mora to be the president at first glance, but as soon as he shows his polite but commanding side, it becomes clear why he was chosen. Mora has the quirk Extend-O-Hair, which is exactly what it sounds like.
But, from what we've seen, his hair doesn't seem to have a hard limit or limiter, and it makes him pretty fearsome. I mean, for any fans of Toriko out there, he's basically like Sunny. At the end of the day, his Quirk might sound pretty lame, but he'll be an absurdly versatile hero in the future because of it.
7 The Day Care Kids: Every Generation Gets Weirder
We had completely forgotten about these little tykes until a recent re-read of the Manga, but boy, what a band of misfits. We're including them all as one big group because all of their powers are equally freaky. Basically, it's explained that as the generations of Quirk society continue, Quirks continue to mix, develop, and mature between people and they get more diverse. And these kids are a perfect example! Just from what we briefly saw of them, there was a kid who could create iron balls that ate anything around them, one that shot a cannon from his mouth, a girl with flowers for ears, a kid that creates dust, and that's just to name a few!
6 Tatami Nakagame: Like A Turtle Except Her Entire Body
We really don't know how Tatami even manages to fight people. She's another kid that shows up during the License Arc as one of the students under Ms. Joke. And while the kids from Shiketsu all seem to have Quirks that fit the standard definition of "strength" the Ketsubutsu kids seem a bit odder by comparison. Tatami has Telescopic, an ability that allows her to fold her body into itself similar to the way a turtle retreats into its shell. It's not as versatile as Foldabody, used by Pro Hero Edgeshot, but her Quirk does make her one of the best people suited for search and rescue missions!
5 The Big Three: A Weird Trio Of Oddball Quirks
The Big Three of UA High are coming in Season 4 of the My Hero Academia anime and people are rightfully excited. That said, we didn't want to take up three whole slots on this group, so we're including them as one. And that only works because all three of their Quirks are super weird!
We won't go too much into it, but Suneater, in particular, has an obscenely odd eating ability that might be one of the strongest in the franchise to date. But that isn't to say that Lumillion's phasing Quirk isn't just as overpowered, and Nejire's spiral energy seems to be one of the most adaptable Quirks around. Basically, they're the Big 3 for a reason.
4 Manga "Comicman" Fukidashi: Literally Manga Come To Life
Literally this kid is just a Mangaka's self insert. His head makes no sense, and if they ever make a live-action adaptation of the series, we'll bet our bottom dollar that Fukidashi won't be appearing. This oddball Class B character is a perfect example as to why the audience wants to see more of UA's class B. Frankly, it's a class full of some of the weirdest quirks in the series! Manga has the same ability as Levy McGarden from Fairy Tail or Koichi from Jojo Part 4, he can bring words to life! Onomonopia's that is. Basically, any sound effect he yells has physical mass and size depending on a variety of factors.
3 Shihai "Vantablack" Kuroiro: The Only Quirk Darker Than Tokoyami's
Funnily enough, just like how Tokoyami is the edgelord of Class A, Kuroiro is the literal Dark Knight of class B. This shadowy figure has always been one that fans have pointed at in the background because of his contrasting appearance. People have always wondered what his ability is and now finally, we know, and it's oddly specific.
Basically, anything black, Kuroiro can hide in, and in some cases, control. Stuff like shadows, black-painted objects, and even Tokoyami's Dark Shadow! It's a great quirk for espionage and even better at night. We haven't seen just how strong it gets when the world is covered in shadow, but you can bet that the scheming hero Vantablack has some plans for when that happens.
2 The Nighteye Sidekick Duo: Centipeder And Bubble Girl
Just briefly, let's move out of the students for a second, and into some of the upcoming characters in Season 4. The Nighteye agency will be featured for most of the season, and in it are two characters who aren't originally designed by Hoshikori. Centipeder and Bubble Girl and both winners of the Fan-Art contest that were completely designed by fans! And, just like die-hard fans would, their Quirks are such great fits in the world of MHA. Bubble Girl is as simple as she sounds, she can great bubbles that really sting the eyes of villains, but that might not be the extent of it. While Centipeder literally looks like a human with a Centipede for a head. But, what's even weirder is that when using his quirk, his limbs become other large centipedes! Gives us chills just thinking about it.
1 Seiji Shishikura: Literally A Horror-Movie Incarnate
And finally, we're at the top of our list and one of the least likable heroes of the bunch, Seiji Shishikura. This diehard rep from Shiketsu is quite the prim and proper example of a student, which works as a complete contrast when he fights Bakugo. But, as another contrast to his personality, his Quirk is absolutely repugnant. Basically, he can turn his body into meat and control it completely as if he was using telekinesis. But what's even worse, is that if said meat touches someone, they then get completely compressed into a bulbing, horrifying, disgusting meatball-esque form. It's a quirk that completely subdues any opponent, but also one that doesn't work well in the limelight.
