A hit anime like My Hero Academia will have a colorful cast of characters, and there will be a character for nearly any viewer to identify with or root for. Some fans love the tough and heroic main character, or they're more drawn to moody side characters or the comic relief characters.

Meanwhile, there's also the question of Best Girl! The best girl of any anime is the most charismatic, friendly, tough, cool, and all-around likable young woman in the entire cast. When it comes to My Hero Academia, two strong contenders for Best Girl are the frog hero Tsuyu Asui, and the genius mechanic Hei Hatsume, from UA's support department. Now, let's go over some reasons why each one should be Best Girl!

10 Tsuyu: she keeps others in check

Everyone needs a big brother or big sister type to keep them in line and make sure everyone is acting their age. Class 1-B has that in Itsuka Kendo, while class 1-A has Tsuyu Asui! Though petite, this girl doesn't put up with anyone's nonsense.

Tsuyu is not easily annoyed or rattled, and she is quick to call out anyone who is being obnoxious, immature, or worse. Often, she sets Mineta Minoru straight, but don't forget that time she tearfully chastised her friends for risking their lives to rescue Katsuki Bakugo on an unauthorized rescue mission.

9 Mei: bright personality

Mei Hatsume really steals any scene she's in, wouldn't you agree? A scene-stealer is a character whose personality is so upbeat and eccentric, you can't help but be drawn to them, and the entire scene is shaped by their very presence.

While Tsuyu is a tough big sister type, Mei is the wacky cousin type! She's always got a fun new idea to share, and her optimism, creativity, and enthusiasm are downright infectious. These are great personality traits for an inventor and entrepreneur type like Mei to have.

8 Tsuyu: flexible quirk

Some quirks in My Hero Academia are more flexible than others. Some are meant for a very specific role or function, such as Yuga Aoyama's navel laser or the sheer punching power of One For All. Tsuyu, meanwhile, is like a frog in many ways.

She can do "anything a frog can do," in her own words, and that starts with her long tongue. With it, she can swing around or throw objects or even catch people or items. She can move and fight well underwater, and she can even store items in her stomach and bring them up later, such as during her and Fumikage's test match against Ectoplasm.

7 Mei: Cool gadgets

What is Izuku wearing?! It is one of Mei's "babies," her high-tech inventions. Being a member of the support class at UA, Mei isn't expected to punch villains or run into burning buildings to rescue victims. Instead, she builds things. Lots of things.

Many heroes need gloves, helmets, boots, or entire bodysuits to augment and control their quirks, and Mei plays a vital role in designing and providing those inventions. Izuku is one of her best customers so far, and so is Tenya Iida.

6 Tsuyu: authentic friendship

Many students at UA are becoming friends, or at least get along and trust each other. Tsuyu, meanwhile, is careful about whom she calls a friend, and it's a good idea to be choosy about who you share your everyday life with.

Tsuyu strikes the right balance: she will get along with and befriend many of the people around her, and use the -chan honorific for them. But she fiercely rejects Himiko Toga's perverted concept of friendship, and won't let Himiko use -chan for her. You have to earn friendship, as Tsuyu demonstrates.

5 Mei: business acumen

Mei was one of the sixteen students to enter the single-elimination tournament during the Sports Festival, but Mei isn't much of a duelist. She isn't here to fight, and the likes of Shoto, Izuku, or Mina could wipe the floor with her.

But that's okay, because Mei had a much more personal goal in mind besides victory: advertising! She spent her entire match using herself and Iida to show off her latest inventions in action, and the business owners in the crowd saw it all. Mei even brought a mic to explain all her stuff! Once the impromptu tech demo was over, Mei allowed herself to be disqualified. Now this is some resourceful thinking!

4 Tsuyu: her emotional speech

Not only is Tsuyu a sort of big-sister type, but she knows how to open up if something is bothering her, and she can win over her classmates and earn their sympathy with her wise words. There was nothing manipulative about Tsuyu's tearful speech; she only said what needed to be said.

Tsuyu was deeply upset when Izuku and the others ran off to rescue Bakugo, risking their lives with the League of Villains and All For One Around. Tsuyu thought she might see her friends die, and that would rob everyone of a chance to be happy together. As we can see in the picture, Tsuyu sent her message clearly, and everyone was soon on the same page.

3 Mei: no apologies necessary

Whoa. What's going on in this scene? You see, Mei needs to know the exact bodily measurements and quirk assessments of her clients so that her inventions will work just right. In this case, Mei needed to know just what Izuku was made of before making an item for him.

It's hilarious how Mei single-mindedly pursues her passion, stepping right over other people's caution or own ideas. She's a bulldozer, and it helps make her such a scene-stealer. Still, maybe ought to ask "May I?" before getting too hands-on... just an idea!

2 Tsuyu: she can take charge

Tsuyu Asui in MHA

Tsuyu had quite an internship, let us tell you that. She saw more action than most of her classmates did, when Selkie and the others ran afoul of octopus-like criminals who trapped the pro hero in the depths of their ship. Things were looking bad.

Then Froppy took charge! On her own, she located the crime ring's boss, and she held off the powerful villain until help could arrive and the villains were apprehended. It was risky on Tsuyu's part, and she got hurt, but her actions helped bring down the enemy gang and Tsuyu learned more deeply what it means to be a hero. Now that's a productive internship!

1 Mei: generosity

This goes hand in hand with what we've covered already. While Mei Hatsume is eccentric, gets carried away, and likes to boast, she is also a wonderfully selfless person. She's not in it for the money or fame, or at least, not primarily.

She's got a hero's spirit in her generosity, as she will eagerly give someone an invention for a test run, and let her test subjects keep them for awhile. As far as we've seen, at least, Mei never asked for repayment or favors in return. All she wants is a chance to give someone a great gadget to help them out. Whatever you need, she's got a toy for you! Here, take it!
