One of the first things that stands out, and continues to consistently impress, about My Hero Academia has to be its colorful and expressive character designs. Although they're complex enough to still keep layers about themselves hidden, it doesn't take much more than a glance to figure out what characters like Bakugo and Uraraka are probably going to be like.

One of the most uniquely designed students, though, has to be the rainy season hero, Froppy, who is better known to her fellow heroes-in-training as Tsuyu Asui. Due to her appearance sharing a lot of similarities with a frog, certain features such as her eyes, tongue, and hands are made larger and more prominent, giving her quite a cute and one-of-a-kind look. Combined with her surprisingly mature and honest personality, she quickly became a fan-favorite, though there are some details about her that even a hardcore fan may miss.

10 Strong Moral Compass

Despite being so young, Tsuyu already has an incredibly strong sense of morals and a deeper understanding of such things than the other students. This is most clearly shown when the other students all get worked up about wanting to go after Bakugo-- which makes sense, given their inexperience versus true villains and their desire to save their friend. However, Tsuyu stands firm, reprimanding them by thoughtfully insisting that they'd be no better than the villains if they broke rules to do what they wanted, even if their personal reasoning seemed just.

9 Downbeat Design

Although Tsuyu's positivity isn't as outwardly shown as some characters, her ability to keep a logical, cool head in the most grim-looking of situations is another form of optimism. However, in the original draft of her design, she was actually shown to be a more downbeat-type of character, whose personality would've more closely matched her "rainy season" title. Interestingly enough, her original concept also had her feature a much more human-looking appearance, and it's hard to picture her not having all of her physical frog-like quirks.

8 Quirk Specifics

tsuyu tongue

Within the series, Tsuyu is described as 'being able to do anything that a frog can do', but that isn't exactly specific when it comes to how her quirk actually functions. There are the obvious abilities, such as her frog-hop, tongue extension, ability to stick to walls, and being skilled at camouflage. However, what goes almost entirely unnoticed about her quirk is her ability to secrete mucus that can induce itching, hide scents, and even induce paralysis. A big negative of her powers that isn't really shown either is the fact that since she's incredibly similar to a frog, she'll end up hibernating if she's exposed to extreme cold temperatures for too long.

7 Official Statistics

Thanks to the official Ultra Analysis book, viewers don't have to simply guess how powerful a character is in differing fields by watching them. However, they aren't exactly books that every fan will have gotten their hands on and read, so many people still might not be aware of Tsuyu's true capabilities.

Her highest stat is her dependability at a six out of six, making her the perfect reliable teammate. Her technique and ability are both a well-above-average five, her speed is a four and her lowest stat is power at three.

6 Her Family

Although this seems like a simple fact that viewers would be aware of, Tsuyu's family isn't actually shown in the main series. They're only shown in the series' second OVA which was bundled with the fourteenth volume, and the animation team that worked on it is the same team responsible for the Two Heroes movie. Tsuyu's father, mother, sister and brother are shown- named Ganma, Beru, Satsuki, and Samidare, respectively. Tsuyu herself bares a striking resemblance to her mother, although she doesn't have quite as wide a face.

5 Concept Gender-Swap

Tsuyu Froppy from My Hero Academia Episode 68

It's hard to imagine Tsuyu as anything but the dependable older-sister type, but she was actually originally conceptualized to be a male character. The only reason that she ended up being changed into a female character is incredibly simple- the author believed that Class 1-A lacked female characters, and so she was changed to help add to that roster. Toru Hagakure, the invisible girl, was also originally conceptualized to be a man and changed due to a lack of female representation.

4 Name & Alias Overlap

Whenever everyone gets together to choose their official hero names, Tsuyu ends up picking a name that she'd had in mind since middle school-- Froppy, the rainy season hero. While anyone who's seen the series will be familiar with this, what's much less widely known is how her actual name and her hero name literally relate to each other. When they're written together, the kanji in Tsuyu's first name translates to 'rainy season'. It's unknown if Tsuyu is actually aware of this or if she simply picked her hero name based on the fact that the rainy season is her favorite.

3 Hidden Intelligence

It's not like the series deliberately tries to hide the fact that Tsuyu is incredibly intelligent- after all, she's an incredibly skilled tactician who's able to remain calm and come up with solid plans in a moment's notice. However, it also isn't like the show ever really highlights her intelligence when compared to characters like Momo, who's well-known for being top-of-the-class in the brains department.

Tsuyu's not far behind, though, as in her class' midterms, she ranked sixth out of twenty. This is pretty impressive considering the only people who surpassed her were incredibly talented prodigies like Todoroki and Bakugo, and the highly studious Momo and Ida.

tsuyu

Tsuyu's one of the most uniquely-designed characters in the entire series, and this usually also means that she'd have a pretty niche fanbase. However, in the official popularity polls, she manages to rank surprisingly high, at least before the series progresses several seasons and more characters are introduced. She ranked sixth and ninth on the first two Japanese polls, and she was actually more popular in the West, managing second-place in the first U.S poll behind only the titular Izuku Midoriya himself.

1 Familial Importance

When one thinks of characters like Izuku and Uraraka, it's hard not to also think of their parents. After all, Izuku's mother is always supporting him and showing her concern for his safety, and Uraraka's entire reason for becoming a hero was so she could help make her parents' lives a little easier.

Although much less touched-on than the aforementioned duo, Tsuyu's family matters more than anything to her. She had to become the designated caretaker of two younger siblings when she herself was still quite young, but this is never a point of resentment for her. She actually goes out of her way to keep in touch with her siblings via video chat once she had to begin living on-campus.
