My Hero Academia is known for a lot of things, amazing fight scenes, inspiring yet cliche storytelling, but its artstyle sticks out the most. Creator Kohei Hoshikori has been a long time Shounen Jump and Western Comics fan and it shows in the characters he draws. Some of them are just absolutely perfect, others are absurdly goofy, and even more still are grotesque/horrifying.

The plan today is to talk about the ones with misleading appearances that made these quirky characters seemed tougher than they actually ended up being.

10 League Of Villains Member, Mustard

mustard my hero academia

First and foremost is one of the most fearsomely dressed of the initial League of Villains crew, a kid by the name of Mustard. Mustard is a relatively young villain (a tad younger than the powerful Class A crew) but has become more vicious and heartless than many of the adult criminals. Mustard's Quirk is called Gas, and it's pretty self-explanatory. This villain expels gas from his body (likely his pores) that induces sleep. It's not Mustard Gas like his villain name implies and he's not immune to it. Plus, the kid has no combat skills, and the gas quickly dissipates if he stops focusing on producing it. For a guy wearing a gas mask using a gun, Mustard was very easily beaten.

9 The Endeavor Fanatic, Ending

Ending is honestly one of our favorite designs in the manga series, as it's just so simple but works so well visually. Ending is a mentally-ill fanboy of Endeavor (and who can blame him considering his strength), but he wants to commit suicide by making Endeavor kill him. Already, that goes a long way for his "tough" image. And, this fanatic manages to capture Endeavor's son Natsuo hostage with his Quirk, White Line. This Quirk allows Ending to control any and all lines painted on the street as objects he can control. It seems like this crazed maniac just might get his wish while also causing innocent deaths until Deku, Bakugou, and Todoroki come in and save the day in a flash. If Ending was more kept-together, he'd likely be tough as nails, but since he's obviously unhinged it's easy to throw him off.

8 The Chainsaw Nomu

middle-tier nomu chainsaw my hero academia

The Nomu are basically their own sub-species at this point in the series, and they can be broken down into a couple of different classifications of Low, Middle, Upper, and High-End. The one named Hood that almost killed Endeavor was qualified to be a High-End, while the one Momo put a tracker on in the Summer Camp arc was just a Middle-Tier. This one (unofficially named Tool Arms) was painted to be a terrifying monster when it was first shown off, and it totally is. But, in comparison to all the Nomu we've seen up to this point (and the ones we'll be seeing in the next season), it pales in comparison.

7 Rikiya Katsukame Of The Eight bullets

If the name Rikiya Katsukame sounds unfamiliar, we completely understand why. To make things more clear, Rikiya was the gigantic member of the Shie Hassaikai's Eight Bullets who constantly smashed through things. Before the raid on the Yakuza lab, Rikiya gave off the appearance of being the strongest member of the Eight Bullets. Now, after seeing members like Rappa, Tabe, or Tengai, we're positive that isn't the case. Rikiya has a Quirk that allows him to siphon other people's stamina for himself, buffing his own size and strength to an absurd degree.

It's one of those "one-touch-to-win" sort of Quirk. But the thing is, unless he's on Trigger, he has to be physically touching his target to take said stamina, so he can be easily beaten by any ranged combatant.

6 The League Of Villains Own Stain Fanboy, Spinner

spinner from my hero academia

Ah, Spinner, the most egregious Stain fanboy. Stain's Bloodcurdle might've been a weird Quirk, but at least it (and Stain himself) were useful in a fight, Spinner doesn't have that luxury. Shuichi Iguchi idolizes Stain but doesn't take after him very well. He's not combat-trained like Stain was, doesn't really think for himself, and doesn't make the best of his Quirk. In fact, the first time we see him use said Quirk in combat is during a fight that hasn't even been adapted yet, and it's exactly what people thought it was. Plus, Spinner is just a shut-in, Stain actually has a tragic past. Still, that scaly face, that giant sword made of blades bound together, and that diehard dedication to Stains legacy does make him appear more fearsome than he actually is.

5 Shin Nemoto Of The Eight Bullets

Shin Nemoto is one of the most dedicated members of Overhaul's Eight Bullets, and also one of the weakest. Nemoto seems to dress simply as if he's hiding some big secret Quirk or something, plus he's also incredibly cold and calculating. This guy is technically the one who also ended Lemillions Hero career as well (the kid already had such a hard life), so he must be pretty fearsome, right? Wrong, Nemoto just has a Quirk that catches people in their lies. Whenever he asks a question, people must answer him truthfully, that's it. He has no combat abilities, and simply carries a gun around for self-defense.

4 Shihai "Vantablack" Kuroiro From Class 1-B

Vantablack is the sleeper-hit of Class B, as his Quirk is so versatile we can't wait to see what he does with it next. Unfortunately, Anime-only fans won't know about him until the Joint-Training Arc, but Shihai is both a hilarious and adaptable character that makes it more clear how badly Class B needs the spotlight. Vantablack is the Tokoyami of Class B, with a Darkness-based Quirk and a love for dramatic speech. But, while his appearance is a bit off-putting at first, once he shows off his Quirk it becomes quite clear the guy isn't exactly lethal by any means.

3 The Pro-Hero, Death Arms

Death Arms smoking from My Hero Academia.

Death Arms is one of the first Pro Heroes seen in My Hero Academia and is also one of the ones who doesn't jump in to save Bakugou from the Sludge Villain. He has an industrial theme to his costume and has some gigantic forearms. This Pro Hero is constantly seen hanging out with Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady (the Meme-Queen herself), but we never really see him doing all too much.

Based on his smoking habit and overall "manly" appearance, Deaths Arms seems like he might have some special "construction" themed Quirk, but it turns out to just be basic-level super strength. Not that super strength is bad by any means, but in a world where there are Heroes who can create infinite ice and flames, plain-Jane super strength isn't the scariest thing.

2 U.A's Math Teacher, Ectoplasm

Ectoplasm gives an eerie grin in My Hero Academia

The U.A teacher Ectoplasm has to be one of the scariest designs in MHA, but he's honestly one of the kindest people. Funnily enough, he actually teaches mostly mathematics at the establishment, dabbling in battle training whenever he can. Ectoplasm appearance consists of a Daft Punk-esque golden mask, a fully exposed set of pearly white teeth in a jaw-guard, and two battle-ready prosthetic legs to make up for the ones he lost in the line of duty. Ectoplasm is a steadfast and determined hero who is widely popular and has plenty of battle experience. But, if fans were to rank how tough he looks compared to how tough he is, it would be like 10 to 6.

1 The Deceptively Kind Guidance Counselor, Hound Dog

Like Ectoplasm, Hound Dog is another surprisingly kind Hero acting under the guise of being scary. Hound Dog goes by the name Ryo Inui, and his Quirk is what you'd expect, he takes on the traits of a normal dog, with enhanced sense (especially his sense of smell). Ryo's Hero Costume is what makes him look so silly yet tough at the same time, as he's covered in fur and wears a muzzle over his mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Inui might look like a beast barely held back by his muzzle, but thats obviously intentional and underneath his appearance is a relatively soft Guidance Counselor.
