In the world of Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia, 80% of the world's people have quirks. Some of these result in unique bodily features, such as horns or bendy arms or claws, and other people can shoot fire or ice, or even have telescopic vision or emit acid from their palms. Toru Hagakure, a student at UA's class 1-A, has a straightforward quirk: she is 100% invisible to the eye.

Toru is a happy and friendly girl, and she has figured out some ways to make her full-body invisibility useful in combat. She's also pretty funny, and her invisibility is used for more than a few gags. Ultimately, this is fantasy anime, and we don't worry too much about the hair-splitting detail about invisibility or the other quirks. But if we do hold Toru under close scrutiny, it becomes clear that this is one bizarre quirk! What ten things about Toru and her quirk are just plain weird?

10 She probably can't see

What makes an object visible? That's easy: light bouncing off of it, then your eyes receiving those light rays. Objects don't "appear" on their own; you need that light going to and fro. But Toru's case, all light passes through her instead, and thus, you cannot see her at all.

This spells trouble for Toru, too! If light is passing through her eyeballs, then she's blind as a bat, and there's no way she could fight or even navigate a room like that. Remember Mirio Togata's permeation quirk? While it's active, light passes through his eyes, and thus, he becomes blind.

9 No vitamin D from the sun

This is similar to the earlier post, but this time, Toru's very health is on the line! For real-life human beings, it is vital to get enough sunlight exposure. Often, just 20 minutes or so of sunlight should do the trick.

Toru is in trouble once again, because she won't get the many health benefits of sunlight exposure, from boosting your mood to the production of vitamin D! The sun rays need to hit your skin, and in Toru's case, whoosh, they go right through. She'd better get some supplements!

8 Unknown face

We have no idea what Toru's face is like, or her hair, or anything at all. We love her for her personality, but we're also curious about what her face is like. Some fan comics have tried to answer this question, with amusing results.

According to Toru herself, she resembles a few different historical figures mashed together, including a man, but we find that unlikely. Was she just teasing us, since we can't see her face for ourselves? How tricky!

7 Dust and powder to spot her

Invisibility is not unique to My Hero Academia; other works of fiction, some of them dating back to the film noir period, also featured characters whose bodies cannot be seen. But there are some workarounds.

For example, coating an invisible person in powder, dust, paint, or the likes should give them away, and form a solid outline. This happened in both Futurama and The X-Files, for example. But despite dusty or muddy terrain being present, this never happened to Toru.

6 Why not make invisible clothes?

What you see is fully half of Toru's hero costume: a pair of powder-blue gloves with pink lines. As for the other half, she wears two boots to walk around in, and, well... that concludes her hero costume.

We think that Toru should have taken a different route, though: make a costume that is woven out of her own hair, and thus, she becomes totally invisible. Mirio Togata did that with his hero costume so he wouldn't have to fight in the nude, and Toru ought to have borrowed that idea at some point.

5 Clarifying her thoughts and expressions

Studies have shown that when it comes to spoken human communication, the actual words that you say make up about 7% of your message! What about the other 93%? It is split between your tone of voice and your body language, with body language getting the lion's share of it.

Toru can make facial expressions like anyone else, but no one will ever see them, and we can't see her fists or see her eyes. All of this robs her of most aspects of human communication. To compensate, she might choose to verbally clarify many of her emotions and ideas in nuance, so nothing is missed. So far, though, she hasn't done that in the anime.

4 Coordination

This is another major headache with full-body invisibility. Many animals navigate the terrain by touch (spiders), scent (dogs), or sound (cats), but the human brain is dominated by the visual cortex. We are seers first.

A person who's totally invisible would struggle to pick up and use objects or play sports since they can feel but not see their own bodies. Toru ought to be knocking things over left and right, being totally invisible like this!

3 Upbeat attitude

Toru Hagakure is an upbeat and positive girl, and we absolutely adore her for it. But there's a possible dark side to this, and it relates to the fact that no one can read her body language aside from seeing her clothes move.

Toru must feel terribly lonely and isolated since no one can directly look into her eyes, whether it's a friend or a lover or even her family. That's so sad to think about! We're sure that Toru has gotten used to this, but it must still feel pretty awful, and you'd think we'd see more gloomy moments from her due to this.

2 The temptation to do evil

Many people daydream about what they would do with superpowers, and flight and invisibility nearly always make the list. Most often, people would use invisibility for dishonest deeds, from spying on their friends and enemies to stealing things.

Toru must have faced this temptation many times, and we'll have to assume that either she's got some iron discipline, or she did do naughty things and her parents sent her to UA to set her straight. But even at UA, there's no way she could resist the temptation to prank her classmates unseen...

1 Quirk apprehension test

Early in the story, we saw all the students take a quirk apprehension test under Mr. Aizawa's watchful eye, and Izuku and Katsuki Bakugo both dominated that scene with their superpowered quirks.

Official data shows us how all class 1-A students ranked in that test, and Toru ranked near the bottom, being 18th out of 20. Now we're wondering: how did she pass that test, anyway? Just run around and avoid Aizawa capturing her? Toru couldn't have impressed him with her light-refraction super move, either, since she came up with that later on. Toru can't use her quirk to impress people; her quirk simply is.
