2022 promises to be a good year for anime fans, especially those who read Shonen Jump. In addition to new material for series like Bleach and Jujutsu Kaisen, there will also be several new series coming out such as Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku and Chainsaw Man. To get fans ready, trailers for all these series have been dropped at the Jump Festa exposition. One of the most noteworthy trailers is for My Hero Academia Season 6.

MHA Season 6 will be premiering in Oct. 2022. The trailer provides a glimpse at the beginning of the next major story arc, the "Paranormal Liberation War" arc. It does well at hyping fans up, but astute manga readers may notice that someone is sadly missing. At around the 0:12 mark of the video, there should be a surprise cameo from Denji of Chainsaw Man fame. The anime staff, however, has seen fit to remove this cameo and replace it with a cheap imitation. Whatever reason they had for removing this cameo, it will be missed by manga readers.

In the manga, there is a shot of hundreds of Heroes mobilizing in preparation for the upcoming war. Among the crowd are familiar faces like Fatgum, Mt. Lady and even Kaminari. If one looks past these familiar faces and into the crowd at all the miscellaneous Heroes, one of them appears to be an obvious reference to the eponymous Chainsaw Man. He is recognizable by his chainsaw-shaped head, the chainsaw blades coming out of each of his arms and his business-casual attire. Whoever this Hero is supposed to be in the MHA universe, he's a dead ringer for Denji's Chainsaw Devil Hybrid form.

The anime tweaks this composition slightly. "Denji" is no longer featured in the crowd shot, although the Pro Hero standing where he stood still bears a striking resemblance to him. Now, instead of having a chainsaw for a head, he has an ordinary single-handed saw. It's not even his whole head; it seems to be embedded in something that closely resembles the base of Deni's chainsaw head. His hands can't be seen, but they likely also have ordinary saw blades protruding from them. His white buttoned-up shirt and black necktie have been recolored to blue and red respectively. This Hero doesn't have a name, as he's only a background character, but if he did, it would probably be something like Saw Man.

This change is likely made because Bones Inc. does not have the rights to Chainsaw Man. In fact, the anime adaption of Chainsaw Man is instead being handled by MAPPA and will also be released sometime in 2022. This cameo may have been fine in the MHA manga, as both it and Chainsaw Man are underneath the Shonen Jump banner. However, as far as the two anime are concerned, it's an entirely different mess of copyright issues.

There are a couple of ways to interpret this alteration. On one hand, it's something of a missed opportunity. To have Chainsaw Man appear in another anime within the same year as the start of his own would have been perfect. The cameo could both advertise the anime while indicating a sense of modern trends on the part of MHA. This chance could have been beneficial for both parties, but now it's meaningless to them.

On the other hand, this can all be seen as a good joke depending on who's watching. The idea of replacing Chainsaw Man with an obvious and cheap knockoff is actually somewhat amusing in retrospect. If fans of Chainsaw Man can look past the wasted potential for a proper cameo, they can get a pretty good laugh out of this.

In any case, this is a minor change and shouldn't stop fans from enjoying MHA. Season 6 promises to be one of the most action-packed of all the previous seasons, and it will also herald a major change in the dynamic between Heroes and villains in all sorts of ways that will become the new normal for the rest of the series. In the grand scheme of things, Denji's missed cameo isn't anything to get too worked up over.

Fans should be excited for both MHA and Chainsaw Man. These two franchises will be getting their due anime adaptations sometime in 2022 -- and even if Bones couldn't deliver on introducing Denji to anime fans, MAPPA is willing to pick up the slack. Both studios promise to excite and amaze anime viewers and manga readers alike.
