My Hero Academia has been a breakout success ever since its debut, but it’s steadily dominated and gained more popularity with each passing year. It’s exciting to see My Hero Academia’s content tackle progressively more mature content and how it continues to compliment and subvert the staples of the shonen anime genre.

One of the most entertaining aspects of My Hero Academia is that in addition to all of the fun characters there are also surprising Quirks in everyone’s possession. My Hero Academia has had to deal with dozens of Quirks, yet it still finds ways to make them all feel unique. Nemuri Kayama’s Somnambulist Quirk is rather effective and it causes her to exude a fragrance from her body that puts people to sleep. It’s incredibly useful to render the opponent unconscious and Nemuri’s Quirk has turned her into a highly strategic fighter that doesn’t rely on brute strength.

It’s crucial to have a powerful Quirk and an altruistic and courageous attitude to be a good hero, but My Hero Academia explores every aspect of the role, including more superfluous details like a hero’s name and their costume.
When Nemuri Kayama was first enrolled in U.A. High and starting her hero career she introduced a rather scandalous costume that left most of her body exposed. The controversial outfit is actually what caused there to be regulations placed on hero costumes and that restrictions now exist regarding the amount of skin that can be shown.
7 What Does She Teach At U.A. High?
My Hero Academia gets into major incidents where all of the heroes must jump into action, but it’s admirable that the series also devotes time to some of the heroes’ quieter moments and the less glamorous classes at U.A. High. The exploits at U.A. High usually revolve around major competitions and tests of strength, but there’s also a more mundane curriculum that’s in place. Nemuri Kayama is in charge of teaching the Modern Hero Art History class at the school. It’s not a fundamental lesson for them, but it still gets Nemuri around students and able to help them.
6 Is She Liked By The Other Pro Heroes?
Nemuri Kayama is a popular professional hero, especially around the students and faculty of U.A. High, but there are aspects of the character that don’t mesh with everyone. Nemuri typically pushes a cheerful demeanor and is quick to help others in battle, but some of the female professional heroes, like Mt Lady, take exception to Nemuri’s style and attitude. Despite how Nemuri claims that her costume is for practical purposes, Mt Lady believes that it’s just a ploy for attention and that she likes to show off in this blatant manner. It’s created tension between some of the female heroes.
5 Why Does Midnight Carry A Whip?
One of Nemuri Kayama’s items that she prominently carries while she’s in her Midnight costume is a stylized whip. Sometimes items of this nature can have a practical application to the hero’s Quirk, but this isn’t the case with Nemuri. The whip is in fact representative of the sadistic and domineering side that hides away inside of the character.
Nemuri operates as a role model and hasn’t let down the professional heroes in the past, but she’s revealed to some people, including an overwhelmed Minoru Mineta, that she has thoughts of domination that she’s incorporated into her Midnight persona.
4 Why Has Her Costume Gone Through Several Revisions?
My Hero Academia has shown many of its characters, Izuku Midoriya included, to go through updated versions of their superhero costumes to better accommodate their personal and professional growth. Nemuri Kayama’s Midnight attire has gone through some changes, but for a reason that’s entirely performance-based. Nemuri’s Somnambulist Quirk is a fragrance that’s expelled from her skin, which either needs to be exposed or easily accessible. Nemuri’s experimented with various types of rippable and breathable fabrics to best accommodate how her Quirk operates. The general look may be the same, but the materials that she uses continue to get revised.
3 Was She Supposed To Have A Bigger Role?
It’s not unusual for a series to pivot from its original plans, whether that means a change in story or for characters. It’s important to allow a series to naturally evolve. Accordingly, Nemuri Kayama’s around much more in the earliest seasons of My Hero Academia, especially during Class 1-A’s scenes at U.A. High. Originally, the plan was for Nemuri Kayama to be Class 1-A’s homeroom teacher, only for the series’ creator, Kohei Horikoshi, to pivot to Eraserhead Shota Aizawa instead. Aizawa is able to get more forceful and disciplinary with the students, which Horikoshi thought was important.

It’s important for a superhero to be able to take criticism. These individuals are of course human, but it’s hard to adequately protect the peace if simple insults can turn them into a wreck. Nemuri Kayama does a fairly good job at compartmentalizing and making sure that her hero work doesn’t suffer for personal reasons, but she’s frequently shown sensitivity over her age. Nemuri is 30 at the start of My Hero Academia and she’s now 32, which is by no means old, but her proximity to so many younger heroes can sometimes exacerbate this compulsion in her.
