My Hero Academia is a fan-favorite series, and part of the reason that fans love it so much is because of how much detail is thrown into the series. For example, there's Midnight, also known as the 18+ Only Hero. She's a controversial character, both inside and outside of the series itself.

But our question is, does Midnight actually deserve to be considered too highly controversial? We're going to go ahead and list out five arguments for both sides of this debate. And by the end, hopefully each reader will have a better idea about what side of the battle they're going to take. Not that this will change anything for the way Midnight is regarded within the series itself, of course.

10 Shouldn't Be Controversial: Her Quirk Requires Exposed Skin

Midnight is one of several characters who is required to expose their skin in order for their quirk to be truly effective. So it really isn't fair to judge her for exposing her skin.

Midnight's quirk is known as somnambulist. Basically, she produces a sleep-inducing aroma from her skin, one which will quickly put to sleep anybody who breathes it in. Since the aroma is produced by her skin, the more skin that is exposed, the more easily she can get the aroma into the air. It really is that simple.

9 Should Be Controversial: She Gets A Little Too Excited About Teenage Spirit

There are reasons to be concerned about Midnight's behavior. For example, during the UA Tournament Midnight basically admitted that she was greatly enjoying all of the teenage spirit the students were showing off. And that was reason enough to sway her opinion on matters (by allowing students to step out of the competition).

It's a bit alarming to think of her being at all attracted to the students, even if it is only their mannerisms that are getting her attention. After all, she is a teacher. And she should probably know better.

8 Shouldn't Be Controversial: She Shows Less Skin Than Some Other Heroes

As mentioned above, Midnight isn't the only character that shows off skin. In fact, she shows off a whole lot less than certain characters (sorry for throwing you under the bus here, Momo). Yes, her outfit is skintight and pretty revealing. But again, she's also not the only character who is wearing something so tight (Mt. Lady has the same issue).

So perhaps it isn't fair to single Midnight out so much. As has been made clear, her outfit could be so much worse than it is.

7 Should Be Controversial: She Used to Show More Skin

Admittedly she used to show off a whole lot more skin in her previous costume incarnations. So perhaps we shouldn't be giving her too much credit for her current costume. We do know that Midnight's last version of her costume caused quite the stir – and it sounds like it was a justified reaction as well.

Especially since, once again, exposed skin = exposed quirk, so there's a very good chance that she was knocking out people without meaning to. Whoops?

6 Shouldn't Be Controversial: She's Supportive of Her Students

Midnight, like all of the teachers seen at UA, is extremely supportive of all her students. And she seems to have a solid understanding of PR as well, given that she was the one put in charge of helping the students pick their hero names. She refused to allow the students to pick names that would be detrimental to becoming a hero, for example.

She's a teacher through and through in some senses. For example, there's little doubt that she would put the well-being of the students before her own. And she's been seen helping with their training, including being a part of their tests.

5 Should Be Controversial: Her Costume's Accessories

Midnight's costume may be borderline, but her accessories are not. There's no doubt in our mind that her accessories belong to those of a classic dominatrix. She's frequently seen wielding a whip, and several other details on her costume hint towards something else as well. Such as the slightest implication of handcuffs and things like that.

She's also been seen holding a bullwhip, or something similar. So she's clearly having fun using items of this theme, despite all of the controversy it stirs up. Perhaps she likes causing all of that drama? We could see that. That or she simply doesn't care.

4 Shouldn't Be Controversial: She's Smart and Competent

Midnight might be a character easily written off because of the way she acts and dresses, but that would be a dangerous mistake. Midnight is extremely intelligent, and she's also perceptive and articulate as well. It's part of what makes her such a great teacher and announcer.

She's also got a solid understanding of her quirk, and that means she knows how to use it. So there's no doubt that the way she dresses is completely intentional. After all, that clothing was designed to tear, which means she can release her quirk at a moment's notice.

3 Should Be Controversial: She's the Reason Behind Costume Regulations

Okay, time to be realistic here. There's a reason that they had to start regulation hero costumes. And that reason is Midnight. She pushed the boundaries of costume design so hard that they were forced to step up and create some basic rules for what is and isn't allowed. And that probably made things more difficult for the heroes out there that have to expose their skin (herself included) in order for a quirk to be properly utilized. So that's not too great, all things considered.

2 Shouldn't Be Controversial: She Knows How to Throw People Off Guard

Midnight is smart and intelligent, as we've already discussed. And that means she knows exactly what she is doing. By dressing and provocatively, she's throwing people off their guards and reducing their expectations of her. And that gives her the edge in a fight. And that sort of edge could very well be the difference between life or death. So we're going to have to give credit where credit is due here. Because she's doing everything she can to minimize damage and protect herself and civilians. Even if it doesn't' look that way.

1 Should Be Controversial: She Likes Dominating Others

And finally, we have to admit that Midnight herself has made a confession in the past. She once told Mineta that she does in fact, enjoy dominating others. There's really no way to spin this little fact. That's all well and good when everybody is consenting and all, and when she isn't targeting teenagers/students. The problem is that Midnight doesn't seem to see it that way. Which isn't the best trait to have in a teacher.
