It's no secret that the hit manga/anime series My Hero Academia takes a lot of inspiration from western superhero comics. That's because the series creator, Kōhei Horikoshi, is a huge fan of said western comics, particularly Marvel Comics, and he wears his inspirations on his sleeve.

While Horikoshi's characters in My Hero Academia all feel fresh and original, it's clear that some characters take inspiration, in one way or another, from characters found on the pages of Marvel and DC Comics. So here are 10 characters from My Hero Academia along with their Western counterparts.

10 Monoma & Rogue

One is an insufferable kid with a constant disdainful attitude toward Class 1-A while the other is one of the most popular characters in her franchise. Despite differences in character, Monoma of My Hero Academia and Rogue of X-Men are each others' counterparts in that they have very similar powers.

Monoma's Quirk allows him to copy another person's Quirk by touching the respective user while Rogue can similarly absorb someone else's powers by coming in contact with them. Both of their abilities have significant drawbacks but the way each of these heroes makes up for it makes them valuable assets.

9 Muscular & Venom

Muscular has sometimes been compared to the Red Hulk for obvious reasons, but his Marvel counterpart fits more in line with Venom. Volume 9 of the manga has a cover image that is a direct reference to a Spider-Man cover featuring the symbiotic villain.

Both of their powers were similar, too. Muscular's Quirk allows him to augment his muscles so much so that his skin can't contain his muscle fibers so it looks like it envelops his body, just as Venom envelops its user and as a result, they're given significantly more strength and agility.

8 Toga & Mystique

Both Toga and Mystique are masters of disguise and infiltration thanks to their useful powers that allow them to completely transform into almost anyone. Plus, they're both villains that have much more emotional depth than they first appeared to have.

While they both have to ability to transform into other people, Toga has to do a few extra steps before she can use her Quirk. She first has to ingest the blood of the person she wants to transform into and the more blood she drinks, the longer she can appear as them.

7 Present Mic & Black Canary

Present Mic has often been compared to Marvel's Banshee but his counterpart would have to be DC's Black Canary. Both are leather-clad blondes with hard-rocking cred that send villains flying with their powerful vocal cords.

Though their abilities have different names–Present Mic's Quirk simply called Voice while Black Canary's power is called Canary Cry–both abilities have the same effect. Both heroes can project their voices in powerful sonic attacks strong enough to make people's ears bleed.

6 Aoyama & Cyclops

While these two characters have very different personalities, they have very similar powers. Aoyama's Navel Laser and Cyclops' Optic Blast are similar in ways more than just the ability to fire blasts of energy out of their bodies.

Aoyama's Navel Laser is difficult for him to control. If not for the special belt he has to wear at all times, his laser would fire off uncontrollably, and it's nearly exactly the same reason why Cyclops has to always wear a special visor to prevent his optic blasts from doing the same thing.

5 Mirio & Kitty Pryde

One is a fun-loving, hard-working, fan-favorite hero with the ability to become intangible and phase through objects while the other is, well, also that. Mirio and Kitty Pryde were both gifted with amazing but difficult to use powers.

There are, however, some things Kitty can do with her powers that Mirio can't. Kitty can be selectively intangible but when Mirio uses his Quirk, everything passes through him. Things like oxygen pass through his lungs, and light passes through his eyes, meaning that while Mirio is intangible, he can't breathe, see, or even hear.

4 Twice & Deadpool

Twice's counterpart is obvious. Twice is My Hero Academia's Deadpool, he's a comedic character with an explosive personality with similar, almost breaking the 4th wall, mannerisms as the Merc with a Mouth, even down to the surprisingly tragic backstory.

While most of Twice's inspiration comes from Deadpool, it's worth noting that Twice also shares several similarities with an obscure Superman villain called Riot, who wears a very similar suit and is able to make copies of himself, just like Twice.

3 Eraserhead & Batman

It may not seem like it at first glance, but Eraserhead and Batman are surprisingly alike. Both of these brooding heroes that prefer to operate in the shadows and were both considered more like urban legends when they started their hero work.

Then, there's also the matter of their power sets. Batman doesn't have any superhuman powers so he has to rely on his wits and his skill. And while Eraserhead has the ability to temporarily nullify a person's Quirk, he's basically fighting on the same footing Batman has to fight on, by his wits and his skill.

2 All Might & Superman

My Hero Academia's All Might and Superman

There are a lot of people who have said that All Might is Superman done right, and whether you agree with that assessment or not, the similarities between both of these characters are undeniable.

Both heroes are icons in their respective universes, epitomes of peace and justice, paragons of the best qualities a person can be even though they're so far above the level a normal person can reach. Both All Might and Superman are symbols that even heroes look up to and strive to be.

1 Midoriya & Spider-Man

Spider-Man is one of Horikoshi's biggest inspirations, if not the biggest. Horikoshi has stated that the web-slinging hero was a major inspiration for series lead Midoriya and for the series as a whole. To Horikoshi, Spider-Man is the truest embodiment of a hero, someone who helps and brings reassurance to others.

With that in mind, it's easy to see Midoriya as being heavily inspired by Spider-Man. And though their powers are different, their ideals are the same, and Midoriya has even developed a new power in the manga recently that makes him closer to Spider-Man.
