My Hero Academia's story continues to ramp up as the tide could turn at any moment, and many characters have the potential to have their Quirk awakened. An awakened Quirk is one that has evolved and risen to the next level, and it can stem from an extremely emotional event or overcoming a past trauma. Due to their frequent contact with dangerous villains, the students from Class 1-A are definitely in the position to have their Quirks awaken.

Fumikage Tokoyami, the dark hero repeatedly acknowledged as one of Class 1-A's strongest students, could be next to have his Quirk awakened. He placed third during the Sports Festival and was personally chosen to apprentice under the #2 Pro Hero. As Tokoyami grows stronger, so does his control over his Dark Shadow Quirk. It could evolve at any moment, allowing him to reach a new level of power.

Tokoyami's Awakened Quirk Could Provide Immunity to Light

Tokoyami Weakness

By studying other awakened Quirks, it may be possible to guess how Tokoyami's own could change through awakening. Awakened Quirks tend to remove weaknesses or limitations that existed in the original iteration. When Himiko Toga's Quirk awakened, she gained the ability to also use the Quirk of the person she transforms into. Twice could create an unlimited number of copies after his Quirk was awakened. If Tokoyami's Quirk awakens, he could overcome his weakness as well.

Tokoyami is the only My Hero Academia character with a Quirk that has its own personality and will. Dark Shadow becomes weaker and meeker when exposed to light, but grows stronger and harder to control when in darkness. If it's hit with a high-intensity light, then Tokoyami will be at a major disadvantage during a fight. Although the young hero has been training to resist light's weakening effects, it remains a vulnerable spot. Through awakening his Quirk, Dark Shadow could overcome its fear of light and Tokoyami would be just as effective in the daytime as he is when surrounded by darkness.

Could Tokoyami's Awakened Dark Shadow Quirk Eat Light?

Tokoyami has a dark and edgy personality, able to turn a bright and cheerful situation into a creepy and moody one with just a few words. What if his awakened Quirk reflected that aspect of his demeanor? A more interesting alternative to light immunity would be if Dark Shadow could regulate the levels of light around it instead. Like Tokoyami, Dark Shadow could learn to make its surrounding environment darker.

It would be a powerful visual in My Hero Academia to see Dark Shadow physically eating the light around itself to make an area darker. This would allow Tokoyami to adjust the level of light to the right amount so Dark Shadow is still effective, without the area being so dark that he loses control. He could be transformed from a "creature of darkness" into a creature that creates it.

Tokoyami's Dark Shadow Could Fight Separately

When Tokoyami currently uses Dark Shadow in My Hero Academia, the two must be physically connected at all times. Dark Shadow can stretch its body away from Tokoyami, but it gets weaker the farther it goes. This limitation makes it difficult when Tokoyami is fighting opponents at far ranges -- or multiple opponents in separate locations.

To overcome this weakness, Tokoyami's awakened Quirk could allow Dark Shadow to leave him entirely, potentially gaining a full body that can move independently from its host. Tokoyami would finally have a ranged ability that doesn't put himself in danger, which would also let him fight one opponent while Dark Shadow deals with another. His reconnaissance abilities would be greatly increased as well.

This new ability syncs up well with a popular My Hero Academia fan theory that Dark Shadow is actually Tokoyami's twin brother, whom he absorbed in the womb. This theory would explain why Dark Shadow has a personality and will of its own, and if it's awakened, then Tokoyami's twin could have its own body to protect and aid its brother.
