My Hero Academia has cemented itself as one of the most popular coming-of-age superhero stories despite supposed plot holes and inconsistencies. Many of its characters are recognizable even to those who typically aren't familiar with anime, which comes at no surprise since the characters are well-designed and unique.

Not only are they impressive, but many of the series' young heroes-in-training impact the story in big ways while they're still just students. However, that doesn't mean that everything done by Deku and his friends is received well. There are actually quite a few times when one of the heroic figures within My Hero Academia does something to cause them to face serious consequences.

9 Bakugo Only Gets Captured At The Start Of The Series Because Of Deku

Bakugo and Sludge Villain in My Hero Academia.

At the very start of the series, Deku manages to ask All Might if he's fit to become a hero even if he doesn't possess a Quirk of his own. His lifelong hero tells him that hero work will be nearly impossible without a Quirk, and it's probably better for him to focus on a more realistic dream.

Of course, this isn't a reality Deku is willing to accept, and he ends up tagging along by refusing to let go as All Might is soaring through the skies. This causes him to drop the water bottle containing the sludge villain, which then escapes and attacks Bakugo, which had life-threatening consequences.

8 Iida Almost Dies While Trying To Chase After Stain For The Sake Of Revenge

My Hero Academia Stain Beats Iida

The Hero Killer Stain feels like the series' first real, threatening villain, and there are quite a few ways he makes a chilling impact on the series. One of the biggest is how swiftly he manages to put Ingenium, Iida's hero and elder brother, completely out of commission.

Iida doesn't respond well to the figure he's always idolized being taken out so easily, and he takes an internship with a hero agency in Hosu in order to track him down. He successfully manages to find Stain but nearly loses his life in the process.

7 At First, Deku Breaks Himself Completely Just To Use His Quirk

In the early days of trying to get accustomed to the drawbacks of using One For All, Deku has an incredibly rough time. Even if it's just a small part, such as a finger, it's impossible for him to access his powers without breaking or otherwise harming at least a small part of his body.

This is clearly an issue, and in his lowest moments, his injuries are so bad that Recovery Girl refuses to heal him since he risks permanent damage to his body. This consequence leads him to a net positive, however, as it leads to Izuku interning under Gran Torino and learning new ways to control his power.

6 Mirio Leaps In To Fight Chisaki Alone & Ends Up Losing His Quirk

My Hero Academia Mirio Sweating

There's something to be said about Mirio's bravery and determination in even the most dire of circumstances. He's similar to All Might and many other idealized heroes from the series, as he wants to save everyone within his power and do so with unbridled optimism.

However, whenever he leads a group to rescue Eri and fight against Chisaki, Mirio tries to take him on alone. While his bravery is incredibly admirable, Deku isn't able to make it to him in time, resulting in the permanent loss of Mirio's Quirk.

5 Nighteye Ends Up Losing His Life In The Fight Against Chisaki

My Hero Academia Sir Nighteye

Quirks aren't the only thing that end up being taken away during the battle to make sure Eri's safe. There are full-on casualties, and though it hadn't been too long since Sir Nighteye had been introduced, his passing after the end of the Chisaki fight still hits incredibly hard.

Nighteye is a huge reason why the group was able to locate and devise a plan to rescue Eri to begin with. However, despite being a brilliant and intelligent hero, he can't escape being impaled by Overhaul and dying after pushing himself to his limit too quickly.

4 Nana Shimura Attempts To Fight All For One Herself & Loses More Than The Battle

Nana Shimura in My Hero Academia.

Nana Shimura was the previous holder of One For All before it was later passed onto All Might. She similarly understood that it was her goal to use her power to stop All For One from wreaking havoc upon civilization and the world as everyone knew it.

However, her attempt to fight All For One by herself ended in vain, resulting in the loss of her life. She didn't have as many powers passed down to help like Deku has, and All Might wasn't in a position at the time to be able to help her.

3 All Might Is Permanently Injured After His Fight Against All For One

My Hero Academia - All Might showing his injury.

Nana isn't the only holder of One For All who ends up facing serious consequences after fighting All For One. While All Might thankfully doesn't lose his life, he does take a serious blow that ends up limiting his abilities as a hero and quickens the urgency of finding a worthy successor.

Whenever he's recounting the fight, All Might himself admits that he was lucky to get away with his life. Even then, it's revealed that All For One wasn't actually killed as he believed. Instead, One For All was growing more powerful and strategizing another path to success.

2 All Might Doesn't Extend A Hand To Try To Help Tomura

My Hero Academia Tomura Shigaraki

Tomura Shigaraki is one of many troubled characters in the My Hero Academia universe whose faith in hero society crumbles after feeling like he was rejected by it. This is a big link that ties all the villains together, despite their differences and how often they bicker.

Nana was Tomura's grandmother, and as her former student, All Might would have been one of the people most familiar with his situation and the help he might need. Despite this, One For All was able to get to him first and develops Tomura into an incredibly dangerous villain.

1 Eraserhead Is Seriously Injured As A Result Of The U.S.J. Incident

My Hero Academia Eraserhead Injured

During the U.S.J. incident, Eraserhead has no choice but to sacrifice his own well-being in order to make sure that the students come out of it unharmed. He doesn't hesitate for a moment and it's the first time that fans really get to see how much he cares underneath his typically apathetic exterior.

This isn't something that he heals from and doesn't face any later repercussions for, either. He says himself during a later fight against Todoroki and Yaoyorozu that the amount of time he can manage to use his Quirk before he has to blink has been lowered overall.
