One of the most popular action/adventure anime series out there right now is My Hero Academia, a world where superheroes and terrifying villains are the norms. Most people are born with supernatural quirks, and the most talented of these boys and girls enroll at hero schools like UA and Shiketsu to hone their skills. In UA's class 1-A, two of the most talented students are Shoto Todoroki and Fumikage Tokoyami.

Shoto can create both fire and ice, and he's the prodigy son of Endeavor, one of the top heroes. Fumikage is the raven-headed wielder of the Dark Shadow quirk, a living entity that can operate both on offense and defense. Shoto and Fumikage represent the best UA has to offer, but which of them is more talented in combat, and why? There is more to a superhero's life than sheer power, after all.

10 Fumikage: Humility

Humility is an important trait for a hero to have, and for more than one reason. A braggart hero is going to sour their public relations pretty fast, and an arrogant hero won't feel the need to improve themselves.

But everyone needs to improve, and Fumikage is quite humble despite the formidable power of Dark Shadow. Fumikage takes nothing for granted, and he is always looking for a new way to push his powers to the next level. He's not about to rest on his laurels.

9 Shoto: Double Quirk

Shoto Todoroki is among the most powerful students at UA for a pretty straightforward reason: his quirk is effectively two in one. His father is a famed fire user, and his mother can use ice, and Shoto inherited both.

This was no accident, either. Endeavor wanted a son who could use ice powers to temper the heat of his fire quirk, and he struck gold with Shoto. With such a flexible quirk, Shoto can do nearly anything, and so Endeavor holds him to high standards.

8 Fumikage: Precise Control

Fumikage's quirk is a powerful one, and it's even stronger in the evening or twilight, where there's little sunlight to get in the way. But for all its bone-crushing strength, Dark Shadow can also be very precise, and control itself well.

During the UA sports festival, Fumikage showed good sportsmanship and mastery of his quirk alike by using just enough strength to push Momo and Mina out of the arena to defeat them, without causing them serious harm. Not just anyone can effortlessly win with such a precise hand like that.

7 Shoto: Ruthless

Fumikage has more precise control over his quirk, but he's also slow to use it at full capacity. By contrast, Shoto never feels the need to hold back, and he can catch his opponents by surprise when he uses his full power upfront.

Shoto doesn't seem to believe in warming up, and this makes him a difficult opponent to defend against. When he fought Hanta Sero, for example, he got carried away and used a colossal sheet of ice to trap (and defeat) his opponent. At least he apologized for the excessive force.

6 Fumikage: Team Player

Shoto tends to butt heads with his teammates, especially Inasa Yoarashi. But Fumikage, being the calm and agreeable boy he is, can get along with anyone, and he isn't vain enough to try and do everything himself.

For example, he joined Izuku's cavalry team despite the risks, and he carried his weight and then some. At the last minute, Dark Shadow swiped a few high-value headbands to put Izuku's team back in the running, and he didn't even ask for a pat on the back.

5 Shoto: More Clever

Even if Shoto's teamwork needs some sharpening, he can still be a valuable teammate if he has enough compatibility with them. He and Momo Yaoyorozu had to battle against Shota Aizawa, and it was a real uphill climb.

But Shoto and Momo made a good team, and they (mostly Momo) figured out a counter-attack plan and carried it out. Shoto easily bought time for Momo to prepare, and he used his quirk to complement her plan with no trouble at all. He thinks well on his feet.

4 Fumikage: Explosive Power

Fumikage has the potential to become class 1-A's most powerful fighter, if he can master his quirk's deepest depths of power. Right now, controlling Dark Shadow in pitch darkness is a challenge, but Fumikage is giving it his best.

When Dark Shadow went on a rampage in the forest training arena, it had enough power to easily take out very high-level villains, and if Fumikage can get a tight grip on that strength, he could become nearly unstoppable. Izuku is right to be in awe of Dark Shadow's abilities.

3 Shoto: Temperature Control

Sometimes, a hero needs to use more than sheer hitting power to turn the tables on a villain. Some heroes or villains are vulnerable to conditions such as heat, cold, dryness, and or acidity, and Shoto can manipulate temperatures with ease.

With the fire side of his quirk, Shoto can heat up and dry out the air, which can work wonders against amphibious villains. If his enemies need heat or warmth to operate, Shoto can go in the opposite direction and plunge the room into icy extremes.

2 Fumikage: Nimble Movements

Dark Shadow is a long, tubular creature with a bird head and two arms. It extends from Fumikage's body, and it can move in all kinds of ways, so long as it remains attached to Fumikage. Its movements are quite dextrous in battle.

This quirk can rapidly strike from nearly any direction with impunity, and this makes it difficult to defend against unless the opponent can form a total barrier, like Cementoss can. On the defensive, Dark Shadow can move rapidly from one vector to another to fend off attacks, even when fighting multiple enemies.

1 Shoto: Barriers

This is a combat ability that stems from the ice half of Shoto's quirk. Ice is a flexible ability in most works of fiction, since it can create icicle daggers, barriers, bridges, and more. Since ice is physical and hard, it can be used in many ways.

Fumikage's Dark Shadow can block enemy attacks with ease, but Shoto's ice can do even more against certain attack types. He can throw up an entire wall of ice to block liquids or swarms of bugs, for example, and he can shield entire city blocks or groups of people at a time with ice barriers. Not even Fumikage could do that.
