The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 388, "Toya," by Kohei Horikoshi, Caleb Cook and John Hunt, available in English from Viz Media.

My Hero Academia has cordially extended an invitation to fans to attend the series' first-ever Todoroki family barbeque.

My Hero Academia's release of Chapter 388, titled "Toya," is powerful. Shoto's mother, Rei, has decided to join the war, hoping she can help defuse Dabi's rage. However, when she arrives, Dabi and his father, Endeavor are in the middle of an enormous inferno, burning themselves alive. Despite her orders for Natsuo and Fuyumi to stay behind, the two followed Rei and joined their mother's voice in urging Dabi to step down and stop his destruction. Some fans, such as ever (@/DabisPoleDance), have used humor to cope with the pain of the chapter by using the Drake meme of rejecting cold soba in favor of a family barbeque. Further injecting comedy into the already funny, albeit dark, meme is that they edited MHA creator Kōhei Horikoshi's face onto the rapper's body.

Rei's marriage to Endeavor was not happy as the conditions of their marriage were for her to give birth to a child who would possess both her and Endeavor's Quirk, thus creating a hero powerful enough to rival All Might. She suffered physical and emotional abuse at his hands, which was exacerbated when her eldest son, Toya, supposedly died. The psychological stress built up, culminating in her accidentally burning her youngest child's, Shoto, left side. As a result, she ended up staying in a psychiatric ward.

What Led Toya Todoroki to Becoming Dabi

Before abandoning his name in favor of his new identity as Dabi, Toya Todoroki craved his father's attention, constantly seeking his approval. However, Toya's Quirk had its drawbacks: while his fire-based side proved powerful, the ice-based side of his Quirk he inherited from his mother made using it dangerous for him. Shoto's birth was a breaking point for Toya as he knew his father would no longer pay attention to him. In his hunger to chase his father, he trained by himself, where one day, he lost control, resulting in the flames swallowing him and leaving him with severe burns. Toya's hatred of his family, especially his father, led to him joining the villains.
