Whether it's dashing caped crusaders solving mysteries or scientists who were affected by a freak accident, there is a wide spectrum of colorful personalities in the hero world that have inspired fans for generations. While most of the modern may be honoring the heroes of old with the superhero movie craze, one shouldn't overlook the new crop of heroes especially those coming from Japan.

My Hero Academia is the wonderful blend of superhero aesthetics and Shonen tropes that have taken the world by storm, and its main character is the aspiring Midoriya Izuku, a timid boy who was gifted a powerful Quirk by the World's #1 Hero. Despite those humble beginnings, Izuku may not be an easy sell for everyone. Here are a few reasons why he is an endearing character (& a few why he's just annoying).

10 Annoying: He's A Crybaby

One of the things that's going to separate Deku from the other Shonen protagonists is, well, his personality. The Shonen world is full of bright and optimistic faces that are willing to shout about their dreams at a moment's notice. In Deku's case, it's hard enough just to get the guy to say hello.

He's most likely the only Shonen hero that one could call a crybaby. While it's refreshing to see a main character not be a loud punk, there's not much to grab unto when the main character, Deku's timid demeanor makes it a little harder to take him seriously.

9 Endearing: He's A Genuine Underdog

While that timid demeanor may make it a little more difficult to get the fans' adrenaline running, the series more than makes up for it by making Deku a genuine underdog. Tons of Shonen series try to make their main characters underdogs without actually handicapping them in any way.

Naruto Uzumaki was a struggling ninja who had a powerful beast within him. Monkey D. Luffy has a rare Devil Fruit. Ichigo can practically do anything. Deku, on the other hand, is a scared kid learning about his new Quirk at a late age; and even then, that same Quirk has a wicked kickback. With Deku working on the most restricted circumstances, it feels genuinely special when he somehow manages to overcome.

8 Annoying: His Quirk Isn't New

On the note of Deku's Quirk, One for All may have some thematic promise with its focus on sharing abilities and experiences; but to some extent, it's still just a strength enhancement ability. While these have been pretty exciting in Shonen's past, it's been done near to death.

My Hero Academia may be a colorful and diverse world, yet fans are just seeing another super-strong character fight with punches and kicks. For a lot of people who have seen a Shonen series before, Deku as another generic Shonen character is just annoying to see getting the spotlight.

7 Endearing: He's Clever

One for All may offer Deku plenty of opportunities, but its drawbacks leave a lot to be admired. Being literally too strong for his own body, One for All typically overexerts his current muscle and bone structures, inevitably breaking and tearing them in the process. Because of this, Deku gets to do something that not that many Shonen heroes get to do: Be consistently clever.

While a few protagonists have a few good ideas, Deku is constantly having to reinvent himself to not only compensate for his weaknesses but also keep up with his rivals and the world's villains. This means weakening his powers, focusing them on certain body parts, or creating his Costume Gamma or Air Force Gloves. Deku may seem old hat initially, but he does a great job of dressing up the fabric over time.

6 Annoying: He's A Fanboy

One thing that may make it hard for some fans to look at Deku is the fact that it's kind of like looking at a nerdy mirror. Deku doesn't keep it a secret that he's a fan of the World's #1 Hero, All Might, but it's not necessarily the same fanaticism that people had with the Hokages or the Pirate King. Deku is a genuine fanboy/otaku/nerd.

He collects All Might action figures, has a bunch of All Might posters, and even models parts of his costume off of All Might. There's wearing one's influences on their sleeve and then there's and then there's having star-spangled drapes. While creating such a modern character is flattering on the writer's part, it's a little annoying to see one Shonen character be a fan of another Shonen character.

5 Endearing: He's Friendly

An easy way to make a character endearing is to just make them friendly, and Deku is at least that. Ever since he was a little kid, Deku was a caring, considerate child that would even lend a helping hand to his biggest bully. While going without a Quirk made his social life hard for most of his life, he was able to make up for that lost time when he got into U.A.

His base niceties were able to win over his classmates; and for a time, even got him elected class president. He's the kid who offered a helping hand when Bakugou fell in a creek, tried to make Sir Nighteye laugh, and gave a brave face to Eri. It's hard to knock him for being too nice.

4 Annoying: He's Given Everything

All might and deku

As stated earlier, Deku inherited his Quirk from his idol, All Might. As emotional as that initial interaction was, fans weren't quite expecting how much of a bargain that Deku was getting. On top of getting some strength enhancement, Deku was also getting quite literally the wisdom and support of past heroes and, best of all, their Quirks, such as blackwhip and, to be seen later on, float.

While he's learned to use parts of this with his own skill and talent, he's kind of borrowed some tricks from others to help make things work, such as how he's stolen various movements and attack moves from Bakugou. Though Deku is trying to become his own hero, it's hard to see that through all of the skills and literal powers that he's taken from others.

3 Endearing: He's Grateful

While Deku has taken quite a bit from other people, one shouldn't let that take away from how grateful that he's been. He's not exactly stealing and manipulating the way that All for One has, and hee has nothing but respect for the people that have brought him to where he is today.

Even though he has stolen some moves from Bakugou, it's a strong testament to how much he respect and admires the guy despite how much Bakugou has bullied him in the past. As someone who's so willing to learn and be built from others, Deku is the perfect embodiment of One for All.

2 Annoying: He's Constantly Breaking His Own Limbs

As addressed above, one of the greatest Quirks in the world comes with one of the largest drawbacks. Though Deku is gifted with incredible strength and, as seen later on, some other Quirks, it comes at a taxing price on his body, with several battles and even practices ending with him getting severely hurt.

Shonen protagonists have sacrificed their bodies to unlock new skills before, but it's always been to protect their friends. Deku has broken his limbs trying to pass an entrance exam, doing a school exercise, and just trying to make Todoroki feel better in the middle of the Sports Festival. There's only so many times that a person can watch another person mutilate themselves in overly-dramatic ways.

1 Endearing: He's Heroic

Perhaps the greatest thing that makes Deku so endearing is how selfless he really is. Even when he didn't have his Quirk, he had that innate instinct to go help people that is oddly even barren in the hero world. This is most evident when he tried to save Bakugou with just his book bag and screaming.

Later on, he'd go on to save Uraraka in the middle of the entrance exams and even kept Bakugou by his side during the midterms. No matter who it is or what the situation is like, Deku is naturally gonna try and save the day.
