Anyone who wants to become a Pro Hero in My Hero Academia has to undergo a grueling education, assuming, of course, that they are accepted into an academic training program. U.A. High stresses the importance of manufacturing a recognizable public presence—names, super moves, catchphrases, and costumes are the four pillars of a Pro Hero's identity.

Several heroes go down the path of vanity and decorate their outfits with meaningless additions, preferring a fashionable appearance, others ensure that their costumes are designed to promote their performance output.

10 Hizashi Yamada's Basic Outfit Includes A Directional Speaker For His Quirk

My Hero Academia — Present Mic

Hizashi Yamada, aka Present Mic, is U.A.'s resident English teacher as well as a highly accomplished Pro Hero. His costume is quite basic—a combination of black pants and black jacket, with an overly large collar stretched out to maximum capacity.

The only unique aspect of his outfit is the directional speaker placed against his throat and used to aim and/or augment his Voice Quirk during battle.

9 Thirteen's Costume Maintains The Theme Of Her Quirk

Thirteen and Kurogiri

Thirteen's Quirk allows her to generate the power of a black hole from her hands with enough force to capture light itself. She wears an oversized jacket, padded with presumably protective material, a pair of white bermuda-esque shorts, and oddly mismatched amber-hued shoes.

Thirteen's head and appearance are obscured by a space helmet, but her face is partially revealed in the Paranormal Liberation War arc. Thirteen's costume maintains the theme of her Quirk without resorting to frills.

8 Toru Hagakure's Outfit Includes Gloves & Shoes, But Nothing Else

Toru in her hero outfit

Toru Hagakure's Quirk is Invisibility, which automatically means that giving her a hero costume would be counterproductive. As such, she prefers to avoid wearing an outfit that would expose her presence, instead resorting to simple gloves and shoes.

More importantly, Toru tends to discard even these minimal items of clothing in the middle of a fight because that's pretty much how invisibility works.

7 Shoto Todoroki Doesn't Need To Waste Time Designing Elaborate Costumes

Anime My Hero Academia Shoto Todoroki Teaches Kids

Shoto Todoroki prefers not to draw attention to himself, but his extreme humility has occasionally resulted in the exact opposite. His hero name is the same as his first name, and his first outfit is barely memorable enough to make the cut.

Shoto's second outfit is also nothing to write home about, although there's something to be said about his utility belt. Given the control he has over his Half Cold Half Hot Quirk, there is little need for Shoto to waste time designing costumes.

6 Mei Hatsume's Outfit Configuration Takes Into Account Both Modularity & Versatility

Mei Hatsume

Hatsume belongs to U.A.'s Department of Support, which means that she has no intention of becoming a full-fledged Pro Hero. That being said, it's clear that her prodigious skill at designing gadgetry and other technological supplies make her a formidable opponent.

Mei tends to strap her "babies" to her body, advertising her talents to anyone watching. Assuming she does heroic work in the future, Mei has no reason to avoid her current options—modularity and versatility being the two major elements in her outfit.

5 Gran Torino's Costume Is Harsh On The Eyes, But It Works Like A Dream

Anime My Hero Academia Gran Torino Jumps Full Costume

Gran Torino's Jet Quirk lets him move ridiculously fast and generate overwhelming kicking force, all by means of the controlled air blasts emerging from his soles.

His hero costume has several holes at the bottom of his boots for his Quirk, but nothing else about the outfit is fashionable. Gran Torino's mustard-yellow onesie and matching cape are borderline comical, in part due to the old man's small stature. He also wears a black eye mask for as-yet unexplained reasons.

4 Tenya Iida's Outfit Is An Integral Part Of His Family Legacy

Tenya Iida-MHA

Tenya's serious personality and disciplinarian lifestyle are in perfect sync with his outfit: a no-nonsense armor of white, blue, silver, and gold wrapped around his entire body.

This costume is heavily influenced by his brother, Ingenium, as well by the older generations of the Iida family (many of who have extremely similar, if not identical Quirks). Tenya wears the costume not because it looks sensational but because of the legacy he has inherited.

3 Shihai Kuroiro's Simple Black Costume Allows Him To Merge Into The Shadows

Anime My Hero Academia Shihai Kuroiro Hanging From Darkness

Shihai Kuroiro can easily disappear into dark-toned backgrounds with his Quirk, explaining why his skin is a featureless jet-black in color.

In order to retain the upper hand in battle, the Scheming Hero: Vantablack wears an uncomplicated costume—a greyish black jumpsuit that helps camouflage him in the shadows (or wherever he's lurking at any given time). The only decorative components of his outfit are a pair of metallic wristbands whose true purpose is currently unclear.

2 Best Jeanist's Outfit Gives Him Access To Denim Fibers

Anime Best Jeanist MHA Hero Costume

Best Jeanist is all about that denim life; he drapes himself, from head to toe, in the material. His waistcoat, trousers, and dress shirt are all composed of a uniformly blue denim fabric, replete with two separate belts (one of which straddles the tall collar around his face).

As stylish as he is, Best Jeanist's costume choice is directly linked to Fiber Master, with which he can control clothing of any kind. However, denim is by far the most easily manipulable material with his Quirk.

1 Fat Gum's Costume Helps Maintain The Elasticity Of His Body

Fat Gum and interns in My Hero Academia.

Fat Gum's hero outfit includes a pair of inconspicuous trousers and a deep-yellow hoodie with an enormous zipper running down the middle. His orange-red boots are fascinating, especially when paired with his alien-like knee guards, but that's about it.

Considering that his Quirk allows him to absorb and deflect damage, it can be assumed that his costume material is designed in such a way that it helps maintain the elasticity of his body. This turns out to be extremely useful when he reverts to his muscular form.
